Hey everyone.. I'm writing up a new campaign arc where my PCs will have to traverse the infinite Staircase to meet a contact who can help them fight back the elemental chaos consuming their home kingdom. I will have the PC's reach Sigil at high 4th level/ Early 5th level. None of my players have experience with the planescape setting and the plot is as follows:

The heroes have found someone they believe can aid them in their search for a way to turn back the evil of their homeland. Before their contact can help them they must travel through Sigil to the Hive to retrieve xxx (an uncommon item of value to the NPC).

My goal is to have a trek through Sigil to expose them to the city and all it's quirks. What elements would you say are must haves for a "Welcome to Sigil" Adventure?????

Here's what I've got so far:
Cranium Rats
Razorvines
Harmonium Patrols

Have you played Planescape: Torment? A good chunk of the first third or so of the game is in the Hive, might get some ideas there...

- Xaositect itinerants doing the sorts of random things only Xaositects do
- a Dabus, perhaps? could even show them the Lady, although imo that's probably better preserved for sometime when it'd fit the plot somehow.
- some antics/subplot involving a portal and/or portal key. someone has become trapped in the Cage? A portal opens and some NPCs or monsters fall through into the city? a two-way portal opens and the PCs fall /out/, into nastier territory, and have to get back through the portal quick?

I wouldn't call any of the above 'must haves', but one thing I think is almost necessary to set the tone for Sigil in general -- take one or more creatures that would be attacked on sight (or at least fled from in terror) on the players' home plane, and have them just hanging around, conducting business like they're normal citizens of the City of Doors. Illithids, neogi slavers, some sort of frightning fiend, a lich or somesuch... A'Kin the Friendly Fiend... whatever is your preference. Even better if the PCs have to do something where they could choose to go to the nasty monster for help.

 Always been a fan of the factions. I agree whole heartly with Chimerasame. 'Monsters' walking
freely in the cage always sets the tone. Also clueless have a hard time with sigil in general when
they first show up considering your walking around a wheel pretty much.

* Factions, Faction philosophies and faction warring
* Random Planar Weirdness
* Someone getting Mazed
* Demons and Devils, the Blood War
* Modrons
* Portals and Keys

But the most important thing:

Slaadi

I mean, what's not to like about insane humanoid toads of pure chaos that plant tadpoles in your skull.

One word Trouts , let them see and feel the city ,  let them meet and greet the people there

Woodly Cupgrass is a must ,  one of my favorites pc  niches is to have them gives the party Free Samples of his new "mixed potions" .  Heck a good way to go is to just grab the book -  Uncaged - Faces of Sigil , and flip to a random pages .

Also a good into adventure  would be   that they have to stop a lightboy gang turf war  and one Huge  thing that alot of people forget is that Sigil is has 2 downs : let the party find out that some is spying from the cealing side  of the city  .

Faces of Sigil. Great book if you can get your hands on it. Has a list of fleshed out NPCs and adventure hooks. Even if you don't use those NPCs, they give some insight concerning the setting's tone. You mentioned cranium rats, look up "the Us." Yummy.
