| #2quale1Jan 03, 2009 10:40:21 | and how could Orcus know the last word without it kill him as well? He discovered the word in the ruins of Pelion (Arborea), only a god can know it without being killed, he was a weak undead demigod then, and the Last Word ate him slowly like cancer, he died trying to get his wand, disrupted by some adventurers. Orcus' body ended up in the Astral where Quah-Namog (sp?) raised him in a ritual and using his wand. Tenebrous spoke the word directly at Primus while his fiendish companions weren't affected. When a modron dies, its essence merges with Mechanus, creating a new monodrone. Secundus gets a promotion in this case. |
| #3MulhullJan 03, 2009 17:13:45 | He discovered the word in the ruins of Pelion (Arborea), only a god can know it without being killed, he was a weak undead demigod then, and the Last Word ate him slowly like cancer, he died trying to get his wand, disrupted by some adventurers. But, I thought Primus is/was a god too. And that the word CAN kill Dieties. According to this, yes I know it's wikipedia on the Orcus article There, he discovered the Last Word, an utterance so powerful that it can destroy deities. The Last Word will also eventually kill those who know it unless the being is a true deity. Kind of contradictory. It can kill deities........ unless they are true deities. |
| #4quale1Jan 04, 2009 3:18:19 | there's a difference between knowing the word and using it on someone Primus was a god, if he had known the word he wouldn't decay like Tenebrous, but no god is immune when the word is used as a weapon on it Tenebrous wasn't a god, he was something in between, above mortals, but still below the god status, that's why he died slowly |
| #5lord_karsusJan 05, 2009 23:39:22 | My guess is secundus became the new Primus. -After Tenebrous, yes. That's what happens with the Modron. When one dies, another has to take it's place. |
| #6kenmarableJan 11, 2009 0:24:11 | By the book, Primus dies and one of the Secundi suddenly becomes the new Primus (although that was apparently delayed while Tenebrous was in there). However, I more interesting take I toyed with got published in Dragon #354. Basically, the evil and chaos of Tenebrous being plugged in as the Primus for a while tainted a number of modrons. So when Tenebrous left and the time of ascension came, one of the Secundi protested. I think the "contest" presented in the article actually came across pretty lame (and got one of the planes wrong - d'oh!), but eventually the tainted and objecting Secundi took his 1/4 of all modrons and left for the lower planes. I think I had the proper secundus ascend to being Primus, but the modron race is currently sundered with a very large number of them turning rather evil. I just the potential of Dark Modrons. :D More fun story and adventure fodder than "Tenebrous left, a secundus was promoted, and everything went back to normal". |

| #8MulhullJan 12, 2009 18:12:47 | -That's the beauty of Modron. Everything is normal, back to business. Wouldn't Secondus's promotion leave a vacant spot at the very bottom of the modron hierarchy? Who filled that? |
| #9MulhullJan 12, 2009 18:19:23 | Also, who rules Mechanus? It says that the three mediators can will anything to happen there to bring it back into balance, and that they can't be killed by anything, period (they have a build in defense mechanism that protects them without any conscious effort. If someone tries to attack them, they go true neutral and stop.) Except maybe by their creators, the powers of creation. I don't see why it even needs Modrons to keep it balanced. |
| #10lord_karsusJan 12, 2009 18:19:50 | Wouldn't Secondus's promotion leave a vacant spot at the very bottom of the modron hierarchy? Who filled that? -A Tertian. And when that guy was promoted, a Quarton was promoted to fill his spot. And go on and on and on, and at the bottom, a new Monodrone was born. |
| #11erik_the_guyJul 18, 2010 13:32:27 | @ Mulhull The essence of a slain modron, no matter where it dies, returns to Mechanus and becomes a Monodrone (the lowest rank) such that the number of modrons in each rank is always constant. When a modron goes rogue or is captured, the number of modrons of that rank is effectively decreased by one. |
