+1 armor < leather armor?

The description for +1  armor states it gives a +1 bonus to AC, which I assume to mean a character wearing this armor would calculate their AC as follows: 10 + dex +1.  So far a character with +3 dex we'd be looking at AC14.

But if that same character were to wear plain old leather armor instead, they'd still get the same AC14 (11+dex).

In fact the +1 armor would always work out to be the same as leather as it is essentially just changing the base 10 to 11 and adding the dex modifier.

If this is the case, who would ever bother wearing +1 armor as it's basically grants the same bonus as leather?

Am I missing something?

Yes - when you find +1 armor, it is generally "Learher Armor +1", so the AC is 11+1+dex. You could also find Chain Shirt +1, Studded Leather +1 and Plate +1.

As Herman points out, there is nothing in the description of Armor +1, +2, +3 which says that the normal AC granted by the armor based on its type is not still gained.

If you wear leather armor you have AC 11 + Dexterity modifier.

If you wear leather armor that gives you a +1 bonus to AC when wearing it (which is what the Armor +1, +2, +3, item description says that armor +1 works), you would have AC 11 + Dexterity modifier +1.
