| #1TheMidnightAgeAug 26, 2014 14:44:26 | Hey, all,
The thread title more says it all. I've been playing in a 3.5 game for a while where I've been playing a pixie using the Savage Species racial class. The group wants to covert to 5e, and that looks like a lot of fun, but I'm not quite sure how best to convert my character over.
I was thinking that, since there was a sprite in the back of the player's handbook, that might be a decent place to start? Not really sure.
Anyone want to help me come up with some quick and dirty racial stats for my character? |
| #2YunruAug 26, 2014 15:27:35 | Best place to start would be in the future when a pixie race has already been released. Failing time travel/cyrosleep/really good patients, compare the 3.5e player races that are in 5e atm with the 5e versions and hack together something. |

Stuff like flight at level one gets really hard to balance. I liked how Arcana Evolved started you off as a "small" race almost like a halfling. Then later you became a Sprite. but even that book had a lot of racial levels to cover everything.

| #6melloredAug 28, 2014 7:17:16 | First, make a striped down version that's balanced with other races.
Pixie Race: +2 Dex +1 Cha Speed 30
Can only use light weapons. The pixie spends 10 minutes to shrinks these weapons down to useable size. Hover: The pixie can hover upto 5' off the ground of surface of liquid, ignoring ground based difficult terrain and effects. You do not take falling damage.
Then make the +4 level adjustment into 4 class levels (including hit points), to give them the rest of their abilities, and the use the multiclassing rules. I went with pixies as casters, though i could imagine a 1/2 caster 1/2 rogue setup as well.
Pixie Class: 1d4+Con hit points / hit dice. Saving Throws: Wis, and Cha. Proficency: in light weapons.
Level 1: Proficency in stealth. When wearing no armor, your AC is equal to 13+ Dex. Full Spellcaster using Cha (same slots as a wizard/cleric/druid) Pixie spells include Sleep, charm, invisibility, ect...
Level 2: Spell caster level. Shrink: You can shrink objects 1/short rest. Expertise in stealth.
Level 3: Craft Special Arrow: You can put a pixie spell onto an arrow. Spell caster level.
Level 4: Flight: As an action, you can fly 30'. Spell caster level. |
| #7Suzume_StjohnAug 28, 2014 9:04:56 | I'd personally go simpler. +2 dex, +1 cha Tiny size Non light 1-handed weapons require 2 hands. Can shrink them down to size with 10 minute ritual. Fly speed 30' And done. If you want spells, pick them up with class choice, or mage adept! ;) |
| #8TheMidnightAgeSep 01, 2014 8:11:43 | That was something akin to what I was thinking, MelloRed, if I wanted to make a 5th edition racial class.
But I wasn't sure if it needed to be a class on to itself, or if it should handled like the tiefling where they get spells racially as they advance in class level.
So, in Savage Species, a pixie once it has fully invested in its racial class, ends up with Str -4, Dex +8, Con +0, Int +6, Wis +4, Cha +6 ability bonuses. They can fly at a speed of 60, can craft special arrows, get spell resistance, are naturally invisible, and can use dancing lights, each alignment detection spell, entangle, detect thoughts, dispel magic, confusion, permanent image, polymorph self, and otto's irrestiable dance all once per day.
In the 5th PHB, a sprite can fly 40', has an Str 3, Dex 18, Con 0, Int 14, Wis 13, Cha 11, has a modified natural invisibility, an ability called heart sight, and is trained in Stealth (and it seems to get double its proficiency bonus for Stealth) and Perception. It is also listed as using a longsword and a showbow, for what that's worth.
So, my thoughts are -- make it a standard race instead of a racial class, and do away with almost all of the spellcasting bonuses from Savage Species. Comparing the stats between the two editions, I think the balancing point would be...
Dex +2 Int +1 Cha +1 Size: Tiny Bonus Proficiencies: Perception, Stealth Languages: Common, Sylvan, one other Heartsight: Exactly as it is in the PHB Sprite entry. Naturally Stealthy: Gains double the proficiency bonus to Stealth checks (disadvantage if flying). Invisibility: Exactly as it is in the PHB Sprite entry, at 3rd level.
What I'm caught up on is the Fly speed and the special arrows. There's a non-zero part of me that thinks the hover solution presented above isn't a bad one, or maybe limit them to fly 10' or 20' until 5th level and them give them full flight. The special arrows, too. Not quite sure what the best solution is there.

Technically, the 4E pixie just had to end it's turn no more than 5ft off the ground, or they automatically descended to that height... |
| #11I_melt_facesSep 02, 2014 16:54:02 | For the arrows i could suggest the "Arcane Archer" feat as is in the "DnD Next" playtest PDF. if you have it. |
| #12HailroboniaSep 03, 2014 7:35:14 | I'm not sure why a pixie would have a bonus to intelligence. Charisma and dex should be enough. |
| #13TheMidnightAgeOct 04, 2014 4:42:19 | Giving this a bit of a bump, since the Monster Manual is out now (meaning that we have proper pixie stats) and Jeremy answered a tweet I asked about how to handle conversion.
In preparing this, I read the infernal legacy portion of the tiefling race carefully and cross-referenced it with the warlock spell list; a tiefling gets the thaumaturgy cantrip free, once they reach 3rd level they can cast hellish rebuke once per day as a 2nd-level spell, and once they reach 5th level they can cast darkness once per day.
A warlock can gain hellish rebuke at 1st character level, and darkness at 3rd character level; so it appears that a tiefling doesn't gain access to their innate spells until a warlock of equivalent character level would gain access to access to spells one spell level higher than the spells in question. In the case of hellish rebuke, however, that spell is cast as a 2nd-level spell -- as if it were cast using a spell slot of the highest spell level that the tiefling would have access to when it gained the ability to cast hellish rebuke, were it a straight caster.
And those became my rules for converting monsters with innate spellcasting to player characters: innate spells are gained by character level, with cantrips being learned at first character level, and additional spells being learned two character levels later than a full casting class would be able to know or prepare them (or, perhaps more simply: the character level that a player character gains access to innate spells with levels 1 through 9 is the spell's level + 2). The if the innate spells have a variable effect when cast with a higher level spell slot, the spell is cast as if the highest level spell slot a pure caster would have access to at the time the ability to cast the innate spell was gained were used (or more simply: an innate spell is cast at the spell's level + 1, if the spell provides an additional effect for being cast using a higher level spell slot).
So, with that framework in place, I started looking at the pixie. While tiering the innate spells as was done for the tiefling is certainly a method of handling the pixie by itself, I still felt that the sheer number of innate spells they have access to would prove to be a balancing issue. I get that 5e isn't quite balanced so much on the number of cool things that a character can do, but more how often they can do them and how long it takes them to do so (the action economy, as it were), but something about it still felt a bit off.
So, doing a bit of mental arrangement, I pared it down to that they can cast only one of their innate spells once per day; under this model, I figure that the pixie as presented in the MM is a one without a class level, and thus mastered how to use their pixie dust instead. I further rationalized that the pixie who takes a class level doesn't quite come to achieve the level of mastery with their pixie dust as they're too busy messing about with other specialties, and are appreciably more limited on its use. As the pixie levels, the pixie dust ability will give them a lot of potential versatility in how they can use that innate spell, but it won't become a go-to replacement for abilities and spells gained from classes.
The superior invisibility was also pretty potent, but is so iconic pixie that it was hard not to include. I reasoned that could be tiered as well, for balance sake.
Pixie Traits Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity score increases by 2, your Charisma score increases by 1. Size. Pixies stand just under a foot tall. Your size is Tiny. Type. Pixies are fey, not humanoids. Speed. 10 ft., flying 30 ft. Magic Resistance. The pixie has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects. Pixie Dust. You know the druidcraft and dancing lights cantrips. You may cast any one of the following spells per day, provided you meet the level requirement: Starting at 3rd level above, you may cast detect good and evil, entangle, or sleep as a 2nd-level spell. At 5th level and above, you may cast detect thoughts, or phantasmal force. At 7th level and above, you may cast dispel magic as a 4th-level spell, or fly as a 4th-level spell. At 9th level and above, you may cast confusion as a 5th-level spell, or polymorph. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells, and you require no components to cast these spells beyond your own pixie dust. Superior Invisibility. Once you reach 3rd level, you can use your action to magically turn invisible until you attack or cast a spell, or until your concentration ends (as if you were concentrating on a spell). Any equipment you wear or carry with you turns invisible as well. Starting at 7th level, you can use our action to magically turn yourself, along with any equipment you're wearing or carrying, invisible until your concentration ends (as if you were concentrating on a spell). Languages. You speak, read, and write Common and Sylvan.
