Hi, im rather new to D&D and have only played partly into a 4 campaigns yet 3 of them died out from DM inactivity. Since I have two new ones starting up in the near future I wanted to begin character creation for a new fresh game. I have been doing melee fighters for the most part and wanted to try out a healer of sorts. I would like a very tanky healer in terms of AC and such. I have the players handbook but im quite bad at pulling together characters and wanted to go seek help from the community and perhaps get some veteran feedback. What race, class, and background would be the best combo for both combat and roleplay aspects? I want to have a chaotic neutral background and actually roleplay around as some sort of fraudulent witch doctor, basically claiming im some world renowned doctor who can fix anyone, a con artist basically though I would still be able to do basic healing of course. My only requirements are to be a healer to an extent. Any combat style goes, preferably magic or ranged because ive been doing lots of melee. It just has to fit the roleplay im going for through creating the character. Im just looking for the best stat distribution and some good equipment / proficiency combos to make a good character all around. Im not trying to be lazy and just ask someone to make my  character, im just not very knowledgable about the game and want to have a good base to work with for my upcoming games so I just want tips to send me in the right direction for what im trying to do.

Please reply in the following format if you're willing to help me out, for organization's sake, thanks!:

Race:

Class:

Background:

Stat Distribution (Highest to lowest):

Equipment:

Proficiencies:

What makes this character build a good combo for combat and roleplay:

clerics are tanky healers with some magical attacks. a death cleric RPing as a doctor could be fun, but a life cleric would do more healing. go mostly wis and con, and take heavy armor experise and you'll be plenty tank.

Go to "a collection of guides" pinned thread.

Read the bard guide.

Read the cleric guide.

Maybe have a look at druid/paladin.

Come back with what you like or not from those.

???

Profit.

The Wis races are:

- hill dwarf {8 14 15 10 16 12}

- wood elf {8 16 14 10 16 10}

- human  {8 14 14 10 16 12} + Lucky (or observant with {8 14 15 10 16 12})

- half-elf  {8 14 14 10 16 14}

Which kind of trickster are you?

- wood elf Dex will help for stealth,

- half-elf Cha will help for deception,

- variant human feat is weak, but it might help your RP concept. Lucky ain't bad, or Observant is weaker but good for spying.

Background also depends on concept. I suggest you look at the perks and see which fits with your concept.

- Acolyte: do you see yourself frequenting the temples?

- Charlatan: do you have a false identity?

- Criminal: do you have criminal contacts?

Maybe you are a folk hero or hide amongst nobles.

Would a sage alchemist background be any good? For the whole doctor part and such... or would this be redundant and not synergize well?

I found my Paladin to be both tanky and a healer-in-a-pinch.  When I joined the group, we had to re-train the group's tactical sense from scratch - I was their first tank, ever - so I got to do a lot of healing until the other players figured out that it was safer to hide behind me than to run around being chased.
