#1 GainVanquish Sep 28, 2015 5:49:24	Hi Guys   Firstly im new here and fairly new to D&D over the last 6 months or so. Currently playing HOTDQ.   Our DM as pre warned us to bring a backup character. While im very fond off my Tiefling Monk i was wondering over the weekend about creating a Dragonborn.   As im still new i was wondering what you guys thought about this Race and whats the optimum classes etc would be. I think they would probably be a Paladin or a fighter but i like to go a little different (hence Tiefling Monk).   Any comments / suggestions welcome.   Thanks
#2 Kahless Sep 28, 2015 5:53:01	Any race can be any class. Dragonborn get buffs to strengh and charisma, yes, so paladins and fighters would be good. But so could a melee-based Cha class, like a bard or bladelock(?) (Haven't played either in 5th, though). Even possibly a strength-based face rogue, if you like that. They are also traditionally sorcerors with that Cha bump (dragon sorcerors make a fitting type/theme).   But really, play what you want.
#3 pdegan2814 Sep 28, 2015 13:09:39	The +2 to Strength definitely lends the Dragonborn well to melee-based fighting, and the +1 to Charisma can certainly help you if you choose to be a Paladin. Sorcerers using the Draconic bloodline origin is a classic choice. A Blade-pact Warlock with a Fiend patron could also have a lot of synergy(more fire spells!).   But if you want to "play against type", by all means go for it. Instead of using your racial stat buffs as bonuses, use them to offset what would be the penalties of your dump stats. Especially if you're determining your starting stats via point-buy, those racial bonuses just mean possible areas you don't have to invest as many points up front.
#4 Macv12 Sep 28, 2015 20:00:08	The idea of a dragonborn rogue sounds the most intriguing to me. I could see a sort of twitchy, snake-like character utilizing charisma and dexterity quite well, but a strength-based rogue is also doable.

#7 BRJN Oct 03, 2015 16:48:58	My Tiamat group has a Dragonborn Barbarian who prefers not to use ranged weapons or her breath.  I (as DM) have found her almost indestructable - so much so that for the Assassination Round 2 encounter I'm going to try to drown her rather than grind through all those HP.  So far, taking collateral damage from the party Wizard's Lightning Bolt spell has been the most damaging single thing she has endured.  She took a dragon's Alpha Strike (multiattack plus legendary action attacks) and was just barely bloodied when the beginning of her turn finally came.  Resist(all weapons) is a lot more tough than it sounds like on paper !
