#1 TwistedRemorse Jan 12, 2015 10:57:54	I'm trying to figure out if the soldier background ranks are in order. Personally I would if thought Calvary would be above infantry, among it is in order of 1 (officer) being highest and 8 (support staff) bring lowest. Thanks guys

It's a d8 to figure out what rank you were in the military. 1 officer 2 scout 3 infantry 4 Calvary 5 medic 6 quarter master 7 standard bearer 8 support staff In that order. I would like to know so our fighter knows who he out ranks among npcs
#4 jaappleton Jan 12, 2015 11:15:18	An officer should be above all those, theoretically. After that, as far as which dictates ranking, none of them should really be above any other. Maybe Cavalry, but that's about it.
#5 Tempest_Stormwind Jan 12, 2015 11:18:02	Considering the table's labeled "SPECIALTY" and not "RANK", it's pretty clear they're talking about military specialty (job) and not military rank (position on the chain of command).   You could have been a private in the calvary corps, a captain in the scouting division, a 2nd lieutenant (reasonably low on the totem pole) among the officers ("Officer" in this case is someone who trained for it; think West Point, or fantasy nobility), and so on. Your rank is up to you and your DM.

Although they would be an officer in one of the specialties, so maybe have them roll twice.   For the others, even if they aren't technically outranking each other, there might be internal politics and unofficial pecking orders. ie the cavalry might think they're better than everyone else, and the support staff might be at the bottom of the social totem pole.

I was thinking of something very similar for an ex-soldier concept, though in this case he'd of defected to a rebel group. The "rustic hospitality" feature of the Folk Hero could be re-fitted to suit the character, with those willing to provide help being other members of the rebel group (many of whom would simply be farmers and other common folk).
