A conjuring wizard at later levels seems close perhaps. Anything better than that? Anything options that would make the choice more fun at lower levels and more rewarding at late levels? |

Druids and wizards both get Conjure Minor Elementals at 4, and Conjure Elementals at 5. Clerics get Planar Ally at 5, Conjure Celestial at 7. All three get Gate at 9. Warlocks can get Conjure Elemental and Conjure Fae, both once a day, and with an inability to scale the spell for higher HD monsters. Sadly, I was holding out for more hope with the chain warlock being a thing. Meanwhile, a bard can swipe some summon spells, though he needs to wait until class level 10 to really start grabbing the big ones. There are currently no options for fiend summons.
In the end, your best option is to go with druid for sheer scope of summon spells, at both early levels, and end game. Alternatively, go with necromancer and raise undead armies (Animate Dead and Create Undead). There's a good thread over on Enworld about wizard necromancers.

I'd probably go druid, focus on wildshape, and work with your DM on reflavoring your transformations. Are you talking about summoners from tactics who call upon a powerful creature for a huge one time attack? I'm not really sure if you could replicate that with D&D mechanics.
As Mephi points out in term of D&D summoning where you bring an extra creature to the field druid is going to be strongest at early levels, followed shortly by the necromancer wizard (if allowed in your campaign), but at high levels the conjuror is the best with no chance of losing concentration from damage and getting bonus HP for every summon. |
