Morning fellow dreamers and fantasy role players, I'm getting a level 8 bard set up to play the second book of Tyranny of Dragons as we are closing in on the end of the first and I just love building new characters. I'm going for a Life Cleric 1/Lore Bard 7. I imagine this Bardette striving throughout her life to have an answer for every question, a counter for any attack, and a eye for chinks in her enemies armor. She will be the groups main healer, but will need to fill other roles as well. Other characters in the part might include a barbarian, a monk, and wiz/sorc. The spell list I have drawn up so far for the bard is as such. 1- Dissonant Whispers, Faerie Fire 2- Suggestion, Heat Metal, Shatter 3- Bestow Curse, Hypnotic Pattern, Tiny Hut 4- Greater Invisibility Polymorph Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I have been running a bard for a while, and these are the spells that see the most use:

1st: dissonant wispers, sleep. Note: it is said that sleep doesn't see much use at higher levels, but I continue to find myself using it.

2nd: suggestion, invisibility, phantasmal force.  Phantasmal force is good against a variety of low intelligence creatures, including most beasts.  invisibility is very useful for turning your party into a sneaky party. It can even be worth a 4th level slot.

3rd: hypnotic pattern. hypnotic pattern only allows 1 save, and can incapacitate a number of creatures.

4th: Yes, polymorph. I don't think improved invisibility is that awesome. It is often ineffective to cast on yourself because you don't have that many non-concentration things to do, and its risky to cast it on another party member, because it increases that chances that you will be attacked (since your opponents will now only be able to see 3 party members, including yourself, and not 4).

Bestow Curse is a good 5th level slot spell, but before that its not so good, as its just another thing to concentrate on.

For your bonus spells at 6th, consider counterspell (good against opponent counterspells too-- I counterspell your counterspell!), blink (helps you keep that concentration spell going), spiritual weapon, and conjure animals. Conjure animals is good because its flexible in that it can be a mount, a wall, and an offensive spell.
