| #1KaptainKrunchJul 28, 2015 7:14:41 | At level 3, the Elemental Monk gains 2 elemental points. Each level past level 3, he gains an additional 2 elemental points (For a total of 36 at level 20.) These elemental points can be used to replace Ki points when using elemental powers. The Elemental Monk restores all elemental points on a long rest (Not a short rest.)

| #2jaappletonJul 28, 2015 7:36:35 | Its biggest issue is "Why use one of these 'spells' instead of just punching stuff?" Oh, Fireball has its use. Yes, that is true. Water Whip? Especially as an Action, and not an attack (it was errata'd into being an Action), it's pretty piss-poor. However, Mearls and Crawford are actively working on that, they confirmed it on Twitter. I almost expect a whole new Monk archetype, at this point. |
| #3CooperjeraJul 28, 2015 7:49:51 | I like the approach of converting arcane trickster or eldritch knight slots to equivalent spell points then applying it to the monk. However, I feel my monk player would tell me to take a hike if I told her she gets a refresh of ki on a long rest.
Thus far, I've house ruled that the elemental monk receives their proficiency bonus in additional ki points. They are recovered on a short rest as usual. The player seems happy with this change, and I don't feel change gave the monk too many resources, because the player does manage the character resources actively. This has been true through level 10.
In general, there is one to zero short rests per game session or recommended adventuring day per the DMG XP chart. |
| #4jaappletonJul 28, 2015 7:52:48 | I believe there's a spell point system in the DMG as well, it may be worth looking at if you want to convert the 1/3rd caster of Eldritch Knight for Monk usage. |
