| #1AsyrinMay 28, 2015 21:40:54 | So the facts: -Making a level 1 high elf wizard that will choose the abjuration school. These stats are unchangable. -We are using a modified point buy system where you can have 27 points or 23 points and a feat. -I'm playing the character as obsessed with understanding the very essence of magic, seeking out magical creatures, scouring the globe to add every single last spell...no matter how useful....to his book.
So here's some of the choices I can make with the above stat system After racial bonus, no feat
Str -8 Dex -16 Con -14 Int -16 Wis -12 Cha -8
After racial bonus with resilient dex feat...which also grants proficiency in dex saves
Str -8 Dex -18 Con -11 Int -16 Wis -10 Cha -8
Alternately, I'm seriously thinking about taking the magic initiate feat and picking wizard. This would grant 2 more wizard cantrips (can't have too many) plus would allow me a freecast of mage armor every day freeing up a valuable level 1 spell slot for Shield. It also fits thematically.
Str -8 Dex -16 Con -12 Int -16 Wis -11 Cha -8
So...any advice? Thanks in advance! |

Other than I'm not sure why you are so focused on Dex of all things. I'd assume this is for AC? Given a choice between 1 AC and +1 HP/level I would generally favor 1 HP. More than that though I would focus on Int.
At level 1 sleep is your god spell so load that and your party should be fine for the first few levels. Other than that you'll want mage armor as a spell both to kick off your ward and as a steady source of AC.
I don't recommend magic initiate for wizard. Look at the guides for various suggestions and justifications. |
| #3ZardnaarMay 29, 2015 18:34:57 | You might want to look at the deep gnome and their racial feat in the Elemental Evil players compaion as you have unlimited recharge on the ward. |
| #4reddaemonMay 29, 2015 19:08:50 | I would recommend Resilient Constitution over Dexterity. Constitution is much more important due to concentration saves. Wizards' weakness is their low HP and if you don't try to counteract it, you are going to drop in 1 hit of a dragon's breath weapon at higher level (not all breath weapons are Dex saves). I would go with 14 Dex and 14 Con if possible or at the very least 12 Con if you really want to have 16 Dex. In any case, the best save proficiency a Wizard can have is Constitution. If you are concerned about AC, you can take one level of Cleric take a Dex of 14 and wear Half Plate. My Abjurer has one level of Cleric and it is very effective. The more characters with healing word available increases party survivability exponentially. You should probably spend your first two ability score increases on intelligence instead of feats. |

If you want to take some ulititarian spells over combat spells, go ahead. If you want to take a feat that may not optimize your character from a combat perspective, but can be useful in RP situations, go ahead. I feel that a lot of people loose focus on the fact that 5his is an role playing game, and not a miniatures combat game. No offense to anyone here, I am merely going on my own personal observations. |

Again, not taking anything away from the people who are coming up with the guides, because I have found them quite useful in the past. |
| #9SterlingRatMay 30, 2015 14:52:16 | Agreed with Kentor on this one... there are lots of holdovers from 3.5 and 4, where it was very possible to make a choice that was a million times better than any other. The OP has only 2 posts... someone should mention that you really won't be too bad off if you don't make the very best mechanical choice of feat. There are a few horrible choices out there, but as long as he goes to your guide or the other guide when choosing spells and makes sure he doesn't overstock on concentration spells, he will be fine.
Although I have to agree with the advice about Resilient Con. Much more useful than Resilient Dex. |

| #13SterlingRatMay 30, 2015 15:57:10 | Ritual cast to start (or charge) the ward? Yes, absolutely. I've yet to meet a DM that didn't allow it. Casting Alarm on a backpack? 1 out of 2 so far... and I was the one. The other DM where I was a player did not allow it. |
