#1 Curyous May 19, 2015 15:58:00	I'm looking for a race / class or race / class / background combination that is a bit "off the wall".   Recently my character died (having only 16 hp at 5th level didn't help) and his replacement ended last session unconsicous on the ground, with the party still in the middle of a fight that looks like it is going to be close .  I may need to make up another one next session.  My first character was developed more from a roleplaying perspective, and my second one was about being effective. so I thought I'd take a different approach with the 3rd one and try something a little bit nuts.   So far I've thought of things like a Dwarven Wild Sorceror (armored up, wielding unpredictable magic forces) or a Goliath Storm Sorcerer (A huge heavy guy that floats around on the wind).  It's a testament to 5e, that pretty much everything I can think of works reasonably well, but that also means they aren't quite as weird as I'd like them to be, so I need some help.  For some guidance, currently our party has the melee and spell striker roles well taken care of, but I'm fine with some overlap if the idea is cool enough.   What is the strangest thing you can come up with?
#2 Lanliss May 19, 2015 16:22:34	Gnomish Paladin? Very tiny, obscene amount of armor.Goliath Warlock might be interesting, but I am not sure. Have not played a Warlock before. Dragonborn monk is another that comes to mind. Also, how do you go down a line on these forums, I enjoy doing lists and cannot do it with just the enter key.
#3 WizardV May 19, 2015 16:24:32	Gnome barbarian is surprisingly effective for being a little guy. No one treats the gnome seriously but the magic resistance makes him extremely resilient. You can splash in druid and wild shape for more effectiveness but that makes it far less weird.   Tiefling or snirfveblin life cleric isn't something I'd expect to see.
#4 Nevvur May 19, 2015 16:34:34	I've never seen a demonic/fey theme crossing in play. Maybe a tiefling druid, or a wood elf fiend warlock.

#11 RCanine May 19, 2015 21:44:28	If you're looking for surprsingly effective, try dragonborn bard, half-orc paladin or hill dwarf wizard. Maybe a stout halfling barbarian.   Lore-wise, a fire genasi druid would also be kind of hilarous, as would a tinker gnome druid. A goliath wild mage sorceror would be bizarre.   If you're looking not for silly but sub-optimal, try a drow fighter, half-orc bard, or aarakocra paladin in plate mail.

#13 SterlingRat May 20, 2015 4:48:11	Absurd is tough to do in any fantasy setting - I can't really think of any example that hasn't been played "to type" or played "against type" already.   A High Elf Barbarian, maybe. Play him very cerebral... rather than a primal rage, he uses arcane magic to poach power and resilience from spiritual entities. You can start with 14 Str, 16 Dex, 14 Con, 13 Int, 8 Wis, 10 Cha. That will give you AC 17. You will have one of the three caster stats to use for multiclassing (as long as the 8 isn't put in Int, the points work) so you could pick up a Paladin level two or Warlock levels... maybe Druid levels for even more dichotomy with the High Elf thing. Even two wizard levels gets you Abjuration spec, a familiar, shield and absorb elements and temp HP every time you use one of them.   Dwarven wizard... no, now that they start with armor, they are not uncommon any more.

#16 Thaenok May 20, 2015 10:22:34	Well you didn't say the race had to be from the phb so I'm going to say a gelatinous cube paladin who was given human level intelligence by a wish and always has to figure out ways to return the items that its sleepwalking alter ego keeps stealing from people. Having no arms and being made of acidic jello, it must find a way to balance its dual nature and quest to eradicate evil, all the while searching to find a doctor to prescribe it the proper herbal remedy to cure it of it's sleepwalking nightmare. Staying away from humans isn't an option either since the wish had the unfortunate side effect of making it obsessed with them. It has even fallen in love with the wizard who gave it intelligence and the wizard now is in hiding scared for his life.
#17 Regin_Vargtass May 20, 2015 11:23:24	I made an Eladrin Barbarian, going for totem path. The idea is to bring the wild ruthlessness of celtic fey into the concept. Charlatan background, posing as a prince of the Feywild, traveling under his true identity as an "alias".

#22 BoldItalic May 20, 2015 12:17:42	Warforged druids are indeed quite rare. I did know one once, though. He worried a lot about having metal bits. He was a glassblower before he took up adventuring. He said that making glass paperweights helped him relax and commune with his inner being. Very zen.

#26 OnionDruid May 20, 2015 14:18:20	Speaking of Drow... Have to say that Drow Sorcerers are absolutely awesome. You really never need to make an attack roll that matters... Ever. Is there any fluff surrounding Drow Sorcerers? I always hear clerics and rangers -_-. If not then I would make a Drow Entertainer Wild Magic Sorcerer.
