| #1Coredump00Mar 24, 2015 19:57:30 | I have a character concept, and it will involve Warlock2/Wizard1 by 3rd level, and going straight wizard after that.
One Invocation is already spoken for, so I only have one to spend.
How important is it to pick up EB and Agonizing blast? I think the Disguise Self at will invocation could be really useful, and maybe fun. So I am thinking of grabbing that instead of Agonizing Blast. On one hand, I could start with 16 Cha, EB and AB; with Hex I can start doing some serious damage.
if I skip out on Agonizing blast, then is Eldritch Blast even worth taking over something like Firebolt? If I go with Firebolt, then don't need such a high Cha. (Then again, good Cha would also help with Disguise self....)
I don't usually play full casters, so any advice is welcome.

| #3HecetvMar 24, 2015 23:28:29 | Honestly I wouldn't multiclass. I'd just go straight lock since that's all you've talked about. Otherwise just go straight wizard. You'll be able to cast disguise self enough times with your wizard slots that delaying your progression by two levels won't be worth it. And eb is pretty nice but honestly you can do just fine damage as a wizard.
however if you go straight lock being able to disguise self at will is great coz you won't have tons of slots and being able to eldritch blast is great coz you won't have tons of slots to cast damage spells all the time like a wizard.
if you waste your stats getting charisma up on a lock 2/wiz x you'll be delaying getting int up, and tho if you start with two 16s you can get them both to 20 BY LEVEL 16 what's the point? You'll miss out on other stuff.
Just do one or the other delaying wiz progression isn't worth the two things you listed and if that's the stuff you want then just do a tome warlock because that will do those things and more. |
| #4Coredump00Mar 25, 2015 8:13:14 | I understand, but I have a character concept/build that requires the War/Wiz multiclass.... I am just trying to fit in the rest of the details.... |
| #5MasterNamerMar 25, 2015 13:17:35 | If you have the friends cantrip the disguise self invocation is pretty great, otherwise just grab a disguise kit and proficiency with it and get agonizing blast. |
| #6Coredump00Mar 25, 2015 14:59:37 | I guess my question is.... how do sorcerers and wizards compensate for not being able to add to their damage spells....
|
| (Reply to #6)lall | My sorcerer is taking a two-level dip in warlock specifically for EB + AB. But he will be using Quickened Spell when he can to do more damage per round. |

| #12SterlingRatMar 26, 2015 10:44:34 | so.... what is the personality concept you are working towards and make sure the DM is going to allow the AoS/AW combo before you build your character around it. |
| #13WizardVMar 26, 2015 16:15:10 | The standard AW/AoS package is a great reason to go Warlock 2. I've considered making this character for Elemental Evil AL. My advice would be to get Wizard 5 before worrying about multiclassing to Warlock. Your ward won't be strong enough to have it matter much before that and you'll be missing that fireball heavily once sleep fades.
Damage wise, the point of this build is that alot of your damage should be coming from armor of agathys. So don't worry about Cha*Attacks damage, worry about spell level*5 damage and making it happen. By level 7 you can have your 15 damage reflect with a massive ward and temp hp pool. When the full warlock is doing 2d10+8 you can be doing 2d10+15 if you get meleed just once. More likely though you'll be bursting at the start of combat using scorching ray or burning hands and doing much more than EB spam. Along the way you'll be a full abjuration wizard. If any wizard can survive, you will.
I wouldn't recommend the Svirfneblin Magic route unless you have 25g per casting you're willing to blow. |

| #15Coredump00Mar 27, 2015 12:26:07 | Deep Gnome is an idea I had not thought of, and Nondetection replaces 6/cast instead of Mage Armor only adding 2/cast; so thats handy. OTOH, Still need AoA, which means still going Warlock, or wating until lvl 8 (Magic Initiate) to bring it on line.
I am not sure how long it will take to get *this* PC to lvl 8, if ever. (Playing AL and have 2 PCs ahead of him.) If I were starting at a mid/high level, then Deep Gnome would be great.
But I guess the answer is self evident, since apparently wizards and sorcerers exist.... so apparently you can be a successful full caster without adding to your cantrip damage... Its just so hard to be a warlock, and not take AB.
But I need the Mage Armor invocation, and if I go with Disguise Self Invocation I can have fun with Friends/Charm/etc and not worry about Eldritch Blast or Cha score so much.

| #19WizardVMar 27, 2015 22:00:28 | There are several feats in the short term and long term I would recommend.
1) Warcaster will let you punish anyone who gets the bright idea that they should walk away from you and ranged attack. It also is essential to help with those Con saves and keep your concentration going. If the build is working as intended you will be getting hit alot. AoA isn't concentration but there are plenty of concentration spells as a wizard and it would be a shame if you gave up using them because of failing con saves.
2) Combine Warcaster with Sentinel for hilarious effectiveness. If they don't attack you, you can attack them. If they try to back up to start using ranged attacks you can cantrip them and your OA will root them. If they do attack you with a ranged attack in melee they have disadvantage. And if they melee attack you they take AoA damage. Make it as unpleasant as possible for all of the above.
After this I would really focus on getting your Int to 20. So just these 2 plus 2 ABI's takes you to level 12. How high do you plan on playing? You want human.
Less important:
Resilient Con. Again, con saves are for concentration. You'll be getting hit alot.
You can still take EB even without the invocation to help with fire immune things, but your bursty fire spells are still up against the relatively high percent of monsters with Fire resistance. Elemental Adept might help with that, especially in the Elemental Evil modules where I suspect there are some Evil Elemental themed monsters you'll encounter.
Spell sniper can be nice at times. Especially if you just snag some utility cantrip like Guidance.
edit: sentinel reaction attack is only for a melee weapon attack. The rest remains true. You could pick up Shillelagh and Guidance if you go to warlock 3 to whack things a bit harder. |
