Unless it lists a specific Gold Pieces amount, the player needs only have a material component pouch or focus which their class can use.

When it lists a gold amount, then the player will need to expend resources to acquire that specific component or will need to find it on their journey.

Alternatively, you could require that players need to find the actual components for the various spells (and this is definitely true if they do not have a component pouch or spellcasting focus). In some ways, this can be an interesting always-on side-quest, but this really depends on how you and your players want to play the game. Talk to them about whether they'd rather play it one way or the other.

If you are casting spells, the spell pouch as all ingredients needed (provided that the material listed has no GP value listed)

SO i believe chromatic orb requires a 50 gp diamond to cast. You must find/but that gem. As long as the spell doesnt say the item is used, you may keep using that material component for future castings of that spell.

What about the homoculus creature? Says you need like clay, nightshade and blood? If they have a component pouch that covers everything?

I could see something about that, since you need enough clay to create to make the body correct? but for the most part yes, pouch covers mudane materials

Oh, in the MM.

Whether a component pouch can do that is ENTIRELY up to you at this point.

Certianly sounds like it should have been an option for Find Familiar to me, as well.

A supplement I'd buy is a Complete Book of Crafting.  One chapter on alchemy, one chapter on scrolls, and one chapter on magic items.

as well as mudane item crafting, like posions and arms/armors.

Would also like to see things like building your own house, farmstead, ect.

OP:

How does the spell in question fit into your plot?

- If it's not related or tangential, just "I buy/order the components" at the town marketplace.

- If it's the special key to BBEG's one weakness, then make the PC go on a quest for it.  (This may be as simple as going into a forest seeking a certain weed, or as complex as Hercules' Twelve Labors.)

- If it's something the Wizard is really looking forward to, put some effort into the process; when the spell works in a pinch, it is much more rewarding.

- If the Wizard player doesn't really care, downplay / narrate the effort and get on to the more-interesting parts.  Think: the boy listening to The Princess Bride, "Eww yuck, a kissy part !"
