Take your build up to level 12. Past that, dip 3 levels of Barbarian. Half-plate + 14 dex = 17 AC anyways, just 1 off from Plate, but you're taking half damage for 3 fights per day. Easily worth it. |

And I'm multiclassing fighter/paladin for the smites (starting wirth fighter I think) so I get my CHA mod on WIS saves anyway. |
| #47FunkySpunkMay 22, 2015 11:56:13 | Depends. If you take your Paladin level first, you'll have proficiency in WIS saves.
Then you need to worry about CON saves. :p
Half Elf is worth it for this build using Paladin levels. You're already making the character MAD by adding Paladin, so the Half Elf stat boosts help a ton. |

| #51SterlingRatMay 22, 2015 19:53:49 | The problem is that you are taking Fighter 4 when and instead of what? Fighter 3 is awesome - the initial first level Wizard spells that you get are very good and there is the abusable MInor Illusion cantrip. Going past 3 means trading Paladin 17 for Fighter 4, which means you lose your final level of spells. Taking more than 3 and less than 6 fighter levels costs you spell slots. The thing I don't like is mixing Extra Attacks. Each class has a really awesome eleventh level and you only get one of them.
For a Paladin taking Fighter levels, I would go 1-5 Paladin, 1-3 Fighter, 6-17 Paladin. For a Fighter taking Paladin levels, 1-11 Fighter, 1-3 Paladin, 12-17 Fighter.
I would not go more balanced than that. |
| #52FunkySpunkMay 23, 2015 6:39:32 | If you expect to reach level 20, then sure, don't go past Fighter 3.
I haven't had a campaign go up to 20 since the early 90's. Maybe your games are different. |

| #60MistwellSep 03, 2015 22:49:28 | Hey wouldn't a quarterstaff and Duelist style yield a higher damage rate than a glaive/halbred and Great Weapon Fighting style? Each end would get +2 damage, which is better than Great Weapon Fighting's benefit to re-rolling the first 1 or 2. You'd lose reach, but gain a shield's +2 AC.
So by my calculation:
Quarterstaff: 1d6 = 3.5+2 = 5.5; 1d4 = 2.5+2 = 4.5; total = 10. Glaive/Halbred: 1d10 = 5.5 + .5 = 6; 1d4 = 2.5 + .5 = 3; total = 9.
And if you can get Shillelagh, as Cleric (Nature) 1 or Druid 1, the initial 1d6+2 becomes 1d8+2 (and magic), for 6.5 damage or 11 total. |

Level 1: 17/12/17/8/13/8
Level 4: 18/12/18/8/13/8
Level 6: Polearm Master
Level 8: Sentinel
Delaying the Polearm master feat does two things: 1) it allows you the freedom to see if you really want a Polearm, or if you prefer a great axe/maul/great sword but 2) it won't allow you the awesomeness of the benefits of the Polearm master feat until level 6. |
