Though i don't any problem with warlock spells slots. They have less nova, but do more control/damage over the course of a day. *Assuming you get the recommended 2/short rests per day. |
| #3WizardVApr 30, 2015 14:47:41 | What's the level range of the campaign? The warlock/sorc and warlock/wiz combo is only really possible after level 5 and really only gets going after level 7. A lot of characters never even see level 10.
Warlocks are arguably the most diverse dip class. If you like the warlock flavor you can get that and a respectable character out of just about any class.
Bard warlock2 fills in the at-will dpr shortcoming of bard. Cleric1/warlock pick up heavy armor. Druid warlock2 gets mage armor and armor of agathys in wild shape. Fighter3 warlock bladelocks combine maneuvers, a fighting style, hex, and invocations such as thirsting blade. Monk warlock2 combine shadow monk darkness with devils sight. Paladin warlock3 channel the warlock slots into smites. Sorcerer warlock3 use the warlock slots to power metamagic. Abjurer wizards warlock2 use the mage armor invocation to cheese out temp hp.
If you want to focus on spellcasting you need to clarify if you want nova potential and buffs from the sorc or spell diversity and survivability from the wizard. |
| (Reply to #3)malhavoc | Thanks for responding; I'm actually looking for more sustained casting and less Nova. I might not have mentioned it, but it would be a hard sell to get my party to take a break so that I could recharge my spells; for some reason they usually disregard what my character is saying (I suspect it could be because my character is insane with bouts of clarity)...Anyways I think I will roll up the Abjuration/Warlock for a bit of party support
I think I may have to try the Bardlock in the future I think that could be an interesting build. |
| #5WeedeaterMay 06, 2015 16:00:58 | I would just try straight warlock and see if you like it. Go pact of the tome and pick some spells like guidance that can be useful all day, blast with eldritch blast, get at will spell ability invocations and see if you can handle it. Or maybe go chain and get a familiar with some abilities of his own.
Warlocks are cool because they cast all their spells at max level, which gives them really powerful spells, but obviously they can't keep casting throughout the day without resting. But they also get the best offensive cantrip and tome can poach from any other spell list and get rituals, and chain can as I said get a minion with his or her own abilities.
Really multiclassing casters is a risky move. It might make you a more versatile warlock, but you'll be a mix of worse lock and worse wizard instead of better overall caster. Furthermore, your warlock slots won't mix with your wizard slots, leaving you behind the curve compared to other caster multi classes. |
| #6AshrymMay 06, 2015 17:55:23 | If short rests are an issue then I would go sorcerer. Wizard casting stats don't match up with a warlock, and both wizards and bards still use short rest recovery for either arcane recovery or bardic inspiration dice. A sorcerer can just use font of magic as a bonus action to capitalize spell slots without needing a rest. Spells known is a bit limited but if your DM allows favored soul or stormborn you can increase the spells known a fair bit that way.
If you don't mind limited bardic inspiration that would be a solid choice for a support style of warlock multiclassed character. |
