I always been a fan of the Oriental Adventure book, modules and whatnut. Played a lot in 2nd edition, then 3rd when they release the book, and now... waiting... But in the mean time, i decided to add a few homebrew add-on to the core class. Comments are welcome and almost necessary to achieve balance. Barbarian: Singh Rager, done Figther: Kensei, done Monk: Sohei, done Rogue: Yakuza, in the near future Wizard: Wu Jen, in the near future
Path of the Singh Rager Singh Ragers draw their furious strength from the noble lion (called a singh or singha) The Singh Ragers' fury never robs them of their discipline and control, which to many minds makes them only more terrifying. They are paragons of warrior virtue whose speed, stength and courage are unrivaled. Lion's Roar: starting at 3rd level when you choose this path, when you enter your rage, you can roar as a bonus action. All your allies that can hear you and are within 40 feet of you gain half your rage bonus to damage, for the remaining of your rage. Swiftness of the Lioness: beginning at 6th level, you gain proficiency in the acrobatic skill and add double your proficiency bonus to all acrobatic check. Furthermore, while raging, you ignore difficult terrain relative to movement (i.e: high grass, ice, mud, etc...) Pounce: at 10th level, if you move at least 15 feet straight toward a target right before htting it with a melee attack, the target must succed on a DC (8+ profciency bonus+ your STR MOD) STRENGHT saving throw or be knocked prone. If the target is prone, you may take a bonus action to make a melle attack against it. Lion's Fury: at 14th level, while raging, every time you get damage in combat, you add 1 point of damage to your next melee damage until the end of your next round. This bonus is cumulative, so if a Singh Rager get hit 3 times in a round, he will do 3 more points of dmage per attack until the end of his next round. Every round "reset" this feature. |

| #3Danny_MontannyOct 03, 2014 4:12:42 | Lion's Roar: make it a part of the bonus action when you enter your rage, so usable only once, and give the rage damage to all allies within 30 feet.
Swiftness of the Lioness: state that they gain Expertise in the ability. Otherwise you have those with Expertise in Acrobatics getting triple proficiency. Consider adding double jump distance while raging, as well.
Pounce: DC for saves are generally 8 + proficiency + ability modifier. I'd stick with that.
Lion's Fury: you only get advantage on one attack until the end of your next turn (not round)? If so, that's way too weak for a 14th-level ability. You already have advantage on all of your attacks on your turn if you do Reckless Attacks. True that this ability might let you have advantage on a reaction attack, but that's hardly worthy of the level for the ability. |

I don't think allowing to spend Ki on a critical would be so bad, and the later feature to change to a critical hit should be reworked. |

The flip side is that the limitation to it is a little on the ugly side. Limiting yourself to a single weapon type means that either the DM has to make sure that your weapon type becomes a treasure option at some point, or you may never actually see an upgrade.

A lot of the classes you list are from specific cultures, and it's kind of hard to figure out how a yakuza (for example) differs from a non-yakuza rogue except by virtue of one being Japanese (or "Oriental") and the other isn't.

It works with crits and makes the two-handed longsword (D10) a more attractive damage option than the Greatsword (2D6) which fits the theme a bit better I think.
In regards to this change you might have to make Ki Critical more expensive to stop double dipping (4 ki would get you 20+str damage with a Longsword) or specify that you can't use both on the same attack.
An interesting thought, what do you think of Ki Critical allowing you to spend Ki depending on what you roll. "After hitting with a melee attack, spend an amount of Ki equal to 20 minus your roll to change this attack into a critical hit." Might be a bit too much math but it would look something like this. I roll a 19, if it hits I spend 1 Ki to make it a crit. I roll a 15, if it hits I spend 5 ki to make it a crit. I roll a 2, which fails to hit, so I can't spend Ki on it.
Anyway, I'm loving the flavour of these archetypes. Great work! I'd totally take 1 level of monk for unarmoured defense and then go the rest of the way Kensei. |
| #17pupoochiOct 06, 2014 11:45:21 | Hi guys, been working overtime this week, so didn't have time to update my post.
Oraibai: you're right, Oriental is so 2005!, i'll make the step to the fututre. Frankly, i simply took the term from past edition, but you're right, it's old...
MechaPilot: Yakuza are mebers of trasnational organized crime syndicates originating form Japan. They are notorious for thier strict codes of conduct and very organized nature. So, although i lkie the idea of tatto magic, it would not apply well to them. BUT you just gaveme an idea for a new monk archetype: tattoed monk!
Varden_Khol: excellent! i will make the change to better fit my intends, thanks for that. I would not change the cost, remember Kensei only have 10 ki points max, so upping the cost to 3 or 4 ki points means you can use this feature only once of twice a day. I will make it exclusive, so if you use ki damage, you can use ki critical at the same time, good for balance purpose.
Good job all, thank for inputs, this is getting near perfection.
