Assassin-ish

Anyone else feel that Assassin is just kinda "meh"? Don't get me wrong, I very much like the 3rd level and 17th level abilities, but the 9th and 13 level ones are neat and great for RP, but seem just sorta...mildly okay. I think it's just that both middle abilities rely on a PC willing to use disguises and falsified documents. It's like they put a Master of Masks or Spymaster archetype with the Assassin o_O It makes sense for an assassin to change his voice and such, sure, but false identities AND mimicry? If I'm a non-deception rogue, is Imposter basically useless...? Again, I think my being upset are 2 abilities that are similar and don't fit with certain character concepts :-x

Converting a 3.5 Assassin, I almost feel I should just go for Thief instead, to get boosts to Stealth, and Second Story-Work is a neat ability. Or maybe Arcane Trickster, since Assassins had limited spellcasting...? I mean, I don't just wanna say "let's houserule it" or "is it okay to swap out an Assassin mechanic for a Thief mechanic"), and I don't wanna be one of those guys who homebrews because it's not exactly as I pictured because there's only 3-subclasses for the class. But I was curious how other people felt.

(I swear this isn't a pure DPS-optimization thing. It's just that my assassin isn't a social rogue, so no "deception" skill. He's a professional, after all!)

Whats in a name?

It looks like the Assassin Rogue type is a concept that concentrates on cunning and poisons, using disguises and deception to approach their target. Think of a high-class assassin who takes contracts on the upper social circles or a less fantasy ninja than the shadow monk.

If your rogue is one who picks the locks of the house and climbs in through the window then the Thief type is probably closer.

It doesn't mean that your Rogue can't call himself an assassin, or take contracts to kill people (as long as your DM is OK with evil PCs.) There is a big difference between game terms and actual use.

It's about what you make of it.

Thieves' Cant, for instance, is often derided as being pointless and useless however I've used it to turn an entire game on its head and alter the course of the adventure for the benefit of the party. The assassin abilities can be incredibly powerful, you just have to use them to their greatest advantage. Not everything is about DPR. Roleplaying can be far more powerful than any attack roll.

There will be (i think), be options to mix sub-classes in the DMG.

I don't really see any balance issue with swapping disguse for climbing if that's what floats your boat.
