Greetings everyone.

This is my first post, just joined a few minutes ago. It's nice to be gaming, again.

I have a question regarding ability scores. I will preface this by saying I've played from 2e through 3.5 and left the game from 2006 until literally last weekend. I rolled incredible numbers for my ability stats.

18-18-17-16-14-11

I offered to reroll but the DM is allowing me to keep the stats.

I'm creating a STR dragonborn (Gold) (+2str +1 cha)  vengeance paladin (maul, sailor), with a back story I am happy to share.

Should I even the stats out to maximize my saves or should I max out str and cha? Seems 18 even at level 20 is sufficent.

STR       16+2                               STR   18+2

DEX       14                                    DEX    14

CON      18               OR               CON   17

WIS        18                                    WIS    16

INT         11                                     INT     11

CHA       17+1                                CHA   18+1

Skills: Insight, Perception Persuasion, Athletics

Feats: GWM, Athletics, Sentinel, Resilient

I am taking wisdom over dex to maximize profeciencies in my skill set and since I am taking insight and perception over intimidate.( He will be roleplayed as a well intentioned paladin, with a REALLY short fuse and a sneezing / snoring fire in his sleep flaw, with a desire to kill any pirate he sees breaking the law)

(Imagine  a gold faced, scaly dude as big as Shaquille O'Neal, carring a maul  and wearing full plate armor  FFS, doesnt need to intimidate anyone. Who needs intimidation in that outfit?

Have played mostly pure paladins through capstone and I see they aren't as MAD as 3.5. Open to any and all suggestions...but I am sold on background, race, and weapon...which fits into the back story.

Gladius, I owe much of this to you. Your paladain build guide and subsequent feedback by many otger posters, has helped me immensely, much appreciated.

Amazing scores you rolled, incredibly jealous :-)

I would put your first 18 in strength and max it at the start. Your 17 I would put in charisma, which would become an 18 after your racial bonuses. At level 4 I would raise this to 20. Put your other 18 in constitution for some great saves at level 1 and it will help with your constitution saving throws to concentrate on your spells later. The rest I think is great. Your paladin is going to a lean, mean, killing machine, that's for sure! You'll love Aura of Protection once you hit level 6 (and with your stats you would increase all your saves by +5 from the start, amazing!).

I would take these stats:

STR     18+2

DEX     14

CON    17

WIS      16

INT       11

CHA     18+1

With the level progression of:

Level 4 - +1 INT/CHA or Actor

Level 8 - Great Weapon Master

Level 12 – Resilient (CON)

Level 16 - +2 CON or Tough

Level 19 – Sentinal or Inspiring Leader

I think maxing CHA and STR early is important, having +1 To INT isn’t that important but you other option is to take the actor feat (just because it is the only feat that has a +1 to CHA, if you don’t care about INT).

I think that since at level 6 you get to add your CHA modifier to your other saves, you can wait for level 12 for Resilient (CON). However that might depend on your play style. If you use a lot of the smite spells or the Banes spell, and require to keep your concentration, it might be better to take it at level 8 instead.

It might be better to take Inspiring Leader instead of sentinel, since vengeance paladins already get an ability when they use an OA, but again that is dependent on your play style.

There is a long play time between now and level 19 so I would take the things most important to you first, then see what fits with your changing character concept.

I'd take the inspiring leader feat.

Two levels of warlock would give you two smites between every short rest, if smiting is what you want.
