#1 thorndawg Oct 30, 2014 15:52:30	Looking for a creature to have killed off my former master. Cliche I know lol. But looking for one that is less common and prefferbly one that would have been hired by a different guy. 5th edition monsters. Haven't been able to go through a monster manual for 5th edition yet. Any help? Thanks!
#2 EmpactWB Oct 30, 2014 21:09:02	The DM's Basic Rules has a bunch of monsters statted up. Offhand, I'd say the Nothic, but I don't know what constitutes common in your experience.

#5 Timborama Oct 31, 2014 5:38:55	Any elemental could have been summoned by an evil wizard/cleric. Celestial or Fey might be getting too powerful, but is worth looking at (especially Hags!).   Plenty of cool elementals with a variety of CRs, so you could pick any one you'd find appropriate to face off against first, followed by his master! Azer, Magmin, Gargoyle, true elementals, Water Weird, Galeb Duhr, that kinda stuff!
#6 Touc Oct 31, 2014 11:24:19	Githyanki. Your master came into possession of one of their prized "silver swords" and they sent an elite squad to hunt him down and retrieve it. You have the tip of the sword that he carefully broke off and secreted. Given that it is said the githyanki squads that fail to bring back swords are executed by their vengeful lich-queen, you have no idea if they'll someday come for you.
#7 IxidorRS Oct 31, 2014 11:45:23	Any ideas on the way your creator died?   Are you looking for an intelligent rival or a mindless beast or perhaps a force of nature?   What abilities did your master have? Was he a spellcaster(what sort)? A grand master figher?
#8 Timborama Oct 31, 2014 13:13:30	Oh! Another idea! Intellect Devourer+Mindflayer. Or a Chuul+Mindflayer.   I really like the latter, for some reason. If only for the fact that I think it's adorable that Chuul's eat every part of a body EXCEPT the brain, because they find it distasteful...
#9 thorndawg Oct 31, 2014 17:39:27	Some awesome ideas. Love the thought of githyanki. Want my initial opponent to be sort of a beast/brute. But behind him is someone really intelligent. Don't know what kind of man to make my ranger master. Seems like he would be a guy with a lot of mystery behind him that I don't know about. But he is a spellcaster to a degree and a pretty awesome ranger in general lol. Some awesome ideas for me to think about. You guys a re a great help!
#10 BRJN Oct 31, 2014 18:50:08	IRL: a Zookeeper was killed by a swarm of wasps when he disturbed their nest while on a ladder.  (He fell / jumped off the ladder, crashed to the ground, and was knocked unconscious.  The swarm followed him.)   How about your master was 'killed by a creeping carpet of vermin, a spell cast as a trap.'  To prevent confusion with a natural accident, the vermin were from the Feywild.  This gives you a Signature Spell to track down, then find the whereabouts of the caster, then (with your friends) get tough enough to tackle him and win, then barge into his lair and defeat all its defenses / traps / &c. Of course there is no reason to track down 100 fey rats (or 1000 fey spiders or whatever) and kill them - but maybe your group triggers the trap spell on your way to find BBEG.  Or he might cast it at you and run off the other way.
