Was kicking this idea around. Wisdom for the casting stat and Druid (possibly Ranger) spell list. Should there be a restriction to two schools like the EK and AT? If so, what schools? What other ability should they get at 3rd? I think allowing them to maintain concentration while Raging should be at 6, allowing them to cast while Raging at 10. Or maybe vice versa? Or just both of them at one of the levels? Maybe do something that allows them to expend a Rage to greatly increase a single spell. Max damage, no saving throw, or something like that?

What do you guys think? Has this concept already came up on here? What would you call the Path?

I'm all for more archtypes and stuff like that. So at the very least, it's worth exploring.

Perhaps a Warrior Shaman style Barbarian? I can see that working. For inspiration, I'd look at EK and Arcane Trickster to check out how a 1/3rd caster is built. And for spells, look at Druid, Ranger, and Tempest/Nature Clerics.

Personally...? I don't like 1/3rd casters. At all. I find them too restricting. I'd absolutely adore a 1/2 caster Barbarian, but I've no idea how to even go about making one balanced. I leave that for you guys.

The Druid spell list looks good. I think limiting it to Conjuration and Transmutation will capture the right feel. Pick 2 cantrips and a 3rd at 10th level like the others. We definitely need a unique ability to go along with the spellcasting. Hmmm... A few ritual castings like Totem Warrior? Is it too early to open up spellcasting while in Rage? It definitely needs to be a feature of the Path, but I'm not sure what level it should be. Also, something would have to be added that lets you keep your rage when you don't make an attack, but cast a spell.

How about a Domain or Circle of sorts at level 3? Choose what aspect of nature you're connected to and how it manifests in you. Maybe have 3 or 4. Stone, Beast, Storm, Plants, Water, ect. Gain addition spells known at appropriate levels.

how does The Path of Nature's Wrath sound?

I feel it may be better to just make it its own unique thing. Maybe that's just me though. Like during a rage, attacks can deal damage of a type you choose, have reach because of vines growing off your weapon, when you rage you are surrounded by an aura of a certain element that does damage to enemies etc. Because otherwise the class itself is beung counter productive to its main feature, and lends itself to broken combos with other classes too.

I like the "concentration while raging" part.

There are a lot if ways you could go about it if you wanted to make a barb caster. Such as your rages increasing spell damage (or maybe just cantrips), your reckless attack being used on spell attacks, and so on. However, the biggest thing to keep in mind is that a barb caster is going to be hard pressed to lose concentration at higher levels, especially once they get that +7 con bonus. So their spells woukd meed to be picked with that in mind.

I think the limiting spell schools for EK and AT fit the classes right. The EK get offensive and defensive magic, while the AT gets magic to confuse and beguile. Conjuration and Transmutation fit the nature theme. They do get one spell per level that doesn't have to be from those schools. And if I go with the 2 spells per level known to fit a certain aspect of nature, that just opens it up even more.

What about this for a 3rd level ability: When you take the Path of Nature's Wrath at 3rd level you choose an element. You can cast spells of that element while raging and can add your rage damage bonus.

This is a bit more elemental/evocation themed though.

A variation on the Paladin smite ability would be cool, but may be a bit OP. Especially when combined with the Barbarians already improved Crit damage.

Something like: While raging, you can spend a bonus action and consume a spell slot to enfuse your next attack with elemental energy. The next attack you makes deals an extra 1d6 Fire, Cold, or Lightning damage for each level of the spell slot used.

It uses a bonus action here, so that you can't do it the same turn you enter the rage. Grants scaling damage with higher level spel slots, but isn't guaranteed to hit so it's still a risk.

Could bump the damage up to a d8 or d10 at later levels too, if the scaling isn't strong enough.

You have to be careful here. The Eldritch Knight's spells are a significant portion of it's class power; they trade Superiority Dice for Spells. 4 Superiority Dice, assuming 8 encounters per day and 2 short rests as the DMG suggests at 3rd level, means the Fighter is going to be able to use about 2 superiority dice (+2d8 damage basically) per fight. They're giving up a lot to get those spells.

The Arcane Trickster seems to be giving up considerably less, which is not symetrical and I don't like it.

But at a glance, I don't think the barbarian's subclasses offer enough oomph to pay for spells. I'd love for the Barbarian and Monk to have 1/3rd spellcaster paths, as it would really open up multiclassing, but I don't think it's possible.

I played a homebrew class once that was a 1/3 caster barbarian. The theme was a geomancer (think Final Fantasy Tactics). At level 3 the geomancer got two damaging cantrips from the druid list, they may be cast while in rage. Other spells could be cast out if rage. At level 6 or so they received Nature's Recover from the land druid. Later levels they got the ability to teleport (via earth/tree/water transport) whenever they entered or stopped raging. If I can find my DM's notes on it or recreate it I will. It was a fricken blast BTW, really made me remember the Warden from 4e.

I'm going to work on a basic concept for what I had in mind, and probably post it here tomorrow, or maybe the next day if I forget.

Here's the concepts I like:

Stick with the same progression and limitations of the other 1/3 casting classes in regard to school limit and number of spells's known.

3rd level will get you a destructive aspect of nature to add one addition spell (non Druid spell), when you get access to spells of that level, of a particular type. I'm thinking Storm, Cold, Heat, and possibly Beast.

6th will allow you to concentrate on a spell while raging, so long as you start your rage on the same turn as you cast the spell. Bonus action spells will allow you to enter rage as a part of the bonus action. Your rage doesn't end early for not attacking a target that turn.

10th will let you expend a use of rage to enhance a single action non-concentration spell.

14th will let you cast non-concentration spells while raging. Which with Persistent Rage, could be all the dang time. If you want to cast a concentration spell, you'll have to end your rage and cast it using the 6th-level ability.

What do you think?

The question is, would the Barbarian get a Bonus Action to cast a spell?  Or at least a Bonus Action to cast a spell while Raging?

I had to do a huge overhaul, and I think this is still extremely OP in some areas. It's also not finished, but I could use some advice if anyone has any.

I may not be the best judge as I'm not very well versed in 5e barbarian, but some of that stuff seems vastly overpowered for its level. Pretty much all of the 3rd level aspect stuff's secondaries are crazy good for being a constant effect.

Without some ability like a 3e Rage Mage,

the casting is totally separate from the Barbs

normal shtick.  Lets say a 1/3rd caster version

had access to both the Druid and Ranger lists

and had the Ritual Caster feat too.  It would

still be using all that mostly out-of-combat only.

@Danny_Montanny

You should either give a spell that alters their Rage.

or

Have the Barbarian Rage alter spells.
