One or two weapons?

This may be relevent for other classes too, I am checking I understand the two weapon fighting rules.

With standard equipment it looks like a barbarian with str 16 can either do

Greataxe: +5 to hit d12+3 damage

or

Handaxe: +5 to hit d6+3 damage and Handaxe: +5 to hit d6 damage

If that is correct it looks like 2 handaxes would be more consistant, have a slightly higher average damage and be better if you kill someone on your first strike. When raging it should do even more damage.

At first level, that is correct.

Higher level you get, more attacks you get, better the greataxe gets.

Any free attacks put 2h in the win column.

Opportunity Attack puts 2hander over the top.

I didn't check out charge, but if it's like previous editions, it's another plus for 2 handers.

I think I also saw an ability or two that granted an ally a swing in this edition, but I can't recall them by name.

The Monster Manual might go bonkers with slash/pierce/bludgeon resistances and immunities in which case, dual wield might be nice.

The game is also currently off the grid, so as in editions past, your DM might get into weapon length problems. Until 3rd edition, a halberd in a narrow hallway was a problem.

Also consider Brabarian gets reckless attack. So dual wield having a bell curve for consistency gets negated a bit, AND your two handed has twice the crit chance.
