Trying to decide which would be better for a Barbarian, a Mountain Dwarf or a Half-Orc, i can create a good story and everythingfor either one... but the deciding factor is what is better Char-Op wise, is Savage attacks that good like i hear it is, or should i go for Dwarf? suggestions?

dwarf give you more AC and HP (with the extra Constitution)

Half orc give you an extra die (d12 if oyu use a greataxe) when you crit (5%), being a barbarian you get advantage on all your attack, so since your rolling 2 dies you got little bit less then 10% to crit. if you decide to multiclass 3 level of fighter champion you'll crit with a 19-20 giving you little bit less then 20% chance to crit.

So what do you want? a tankish barbarian (Dwarf) or a DPR barbarian (half orc)

The damage boost is pretty minimal.

5% of 6.5 = 0.325

With reckless attack and 3 levels of fighter it's a little better, but still fairly small.

20% * 6.5 = 1.3

But the big feature of half-orcs is relentless endurance.   Which, IMO, will make up for any loss of HP/AC.

So Half-Orc.  Though dwarves aren't far behind.

Half-Orc it is!, hmm wow didn't realize that relentless endurance was that great lookin' at it, but now i see. and thanks for the math, cause i couldn't tell how great or how underwhelming that savage attacks was versus the extra con boost/ str boost from going mountain dwarf.

so my question then is, does that mean a Dwarf would be better as a Bear Totem Barbarian (Tank) and Half-Orc better as a Berserker Tank?

also how great are the Bear Totem Shamans as tanks versus the Fighter or Paladin?

Tanking wise I will alway love the polearm master+sentinel combo

Polearm master give you an AoO against someone getting in your threaten zone. the polearm weapon give you 10 foot reach, so the first target coming within 10 feet of you you can AoO him. Sentinelle drop the speed to 0 to any target you hit with an AoO for the rest of the turn.

So basically the ennemy charge near you, you attac him stop him in his track. the ennemy doesn'T have reach so he end it's turn

on your turn attack the target

on the target next turn, he might come and attack you (so you sucessfully did your tanking job) or he might try to run away from you, when he's out of your threathen zone, you get your regular AoO and stop him in his track by reducing it's speed to 0

On your move 5 feet forward and attack him

If he try to run away again repeat the last step

This little combo is very effective agianst melee combattant, if they are range it's not as effectife, this is why Mage Slayer is great to add here, make sure you also have a non reach weapon (longsword and shield) if there is a caster go in melee with him.

If he try to cast a spell you can use your reaction to attack him, he got disavantage on concentration and you gain advantage against his spells. if he try to disengage, sentinelle still give you an AoO against him, reducing it's speed to 0 BEFORE he leave your threathen area. If the mage try to attack someone else, you can use your reaction to attack him

so with 3 feat your tank should be able to deal with melee and spellcaster, Archer will still be a pain in the ass.

a barbarian and paladin got there 3rd feat at level 12

a fighter get is 3rd feat at level 8
