| #1whagbergSep 27, 2015 17:09:09 | I have a player who wants help making a half-elf barbarian/cleric. I know it won't be the best optimized but it fits her character concept. She rolled her character and got the Dark One`s own luck on the rolls and got 16, 17, 13,13,16 and 11. Help a guy out please. |

Start barbarian for the Con save and martial weapons. The core is barbarian 5 / Cleric 8 for extra attack and divine strike. The order and further levels really depends on which class has priority.
War priest makes a mini-berserker but its divine strike damage type is weak. Trickery gives advantage on attacks. Nature has the best damage type and can "share" resistance. Tempest/Life also fit different sides of nature.

My suggestion is that you divorce concept from class. You can be from a barbarian tribe and act like a barbarian without having to actually take levels in the barbarian class. You can also be a priestess without taking cleric levels. A nature or war domain cleric with the outlander background, or a barbarian with the acolyte background might work better.
Otherwise the only other option is as DM you ommit the rule that she can't cast spells while raging. It is really the only way I see for the concept to work. |

Be open to changing which spells you apply it to in case an especially powerful combo comes up that you don't like. In general, even if you allow spellcasting during raging, it's kind of a waste of a turn of rage, since you're not taking advantage of the benefits it gives you (except maybe damage resistance). Doing an extra 2-4 damage on Inflict Wounds isn't going to blow the her power wildly out of proportion, but it will encourage her to blend the two styles more. You might add the rage bonus to healing spells as well, since that's the cleric's forte.
Further, a barbarian subclass called "Path of (cleric domain)" that lets her cast spells and do some other things might work. You might have an effect to heal someone when you hit someone else with an attack, use Reckless Attack to give targets of spells disadvantage on saves, etc. But it's not necessary. |
