Put another way, which skills are most likely to result in Very Bad Things if the party doesn’t succeed every single time on medium difficulty checks? |

| #3DireachOct 03, 2014 20:21:18 | I'd say the most generally useful skills are, in descending order from most to least valuable:
Perception Athletics/Acrobatics (tied, depends on whether you have Str or Dex) Thieves' Tools (kit, not skill, but still valuable) Investigation Survival (wilderness shelter & tracking) Persuasion (NPC interactions) Nature/Arcana (equally valuable for different reasons) Insight Deception Intimidation
There are more than nine there, but some are very close, you can pick and choose further down the list.

| #5OraibiOct 04, 2014 3:01:02 | Perception is less useful than you might think, depending on the DM's style, because if you have a DM who uses passive perception extensively then this does nothing for you.

| #6YunruOct 04, 2014 3:05:57 | As mentioned, everyone in your party effectively already has reliable talent for perception. |

Passive perception existing is irrelevant. The rogue would be taking the skill proficiency anyway for the bonus because it's an important skill for them regardless. |
