| #1Matau99Mar 10, 2015 18:51:14 | So, after browsing through the cantrips, one in particular caught my eye: Magic Stone. While apparently lackluster at first, notice its casting time--1 bonus action. And it's designed to be thrown with a sling (literally ever class in the game is proficient). It does 1d6+spellcasting ability modifier.
At 1st level, it's not that hard to get a +3 in your spellcasting ability, giving this an average damage of 3.5+3=6.5. That's the same as Poison Spray, and resistance/immunity to bludgeoning damage (this would probably count as a magic weapon, though I'm by no means sure) is less common than poison damage. On top of this, it's got much better range. Poison Spray requires you to be within 10 feet of the target, which is rather too close for a full caster. A 60-foot range even when thrown is just amazing. You're against AC and not Con save, which could go either way, depending on the monster.
It makes up for its inital power by never scaling at higher levels aside from your spellcasting modifier (presumably) increasing, but it does look very powerful at 1st level.
Additionally, we have the first true AoE cantrip in Thunderclap! I've been waiting for something like that.
What do you all think? |
| #2WanderingBardMar 10, 2015 19:59:29 | Cantrips are for continued use throughout the campaign when you run out of spell slots. Considering it dosent scale it becomes a useless cantrip unless you can replace it (which I have no idea if you can). But then again wizards have a crap ton of spell slots, so having to resort to cantrips at later levels is moot. I don't like it much, also the idea of a mage running around slingshotting people with pebbles sounds lame. |
| #3melloredMar 10, 2015 20:52:48 | rogue with magic initiate and magic stone. |
| #4UndrhilMar 10, 2015 22:01:23 | Unfortunately, magic stone isn't a cantrip available to Wizards. Druids and Warlocks get it, though.
It is nice because it would bypass resistance to non-magic attacks, since the pebbles are considered magic while the spell is active on them. |

| #6Dark_KainMar 11, 2015 4:24:52 | Valorous bards can grab eldrich blast + magic stone with magical secret and enjoy the best at-will number of attacks per round of the game disregarding entirely STR/DEX |
| #7Matau99Mar 11, 2015 4:31:36 | Does attacking with Magic Stone use your action? It doesn't say. I know the casting time is a bonus action, but then do you need an additional action/bonus action for throwing/slinging it? |
| #8Dark_KainMar 11, 2015 4:47:09 | The spells enchant tree stones and then explain their new stats, so I am pretty certain that you are supposed to use them with the good old attack action, just like Shillellagh. |
| #9YunruMar 11, 2015 4:53:14 | Which is annoying because there's exactly one too few for a straight Eldritch Knight. EK 11 can enjoy Magic Stones -> Throw all said stones. Yup, a Fighter that isn't Str or Dex based. Or limited to a staff. |
| #10Dark_KainMar 11, 2015 5:06:28 | EK would still suffer from MAD anyway since they can't cast Magic stones with INT. Valorous Bard is the way! |
| #11YunruMar 11, 2015 5:12:47 | Bah, they can cast it with Cha or Wis, and everyone knows the true EKs go EK/Cleric, or EK/Sorcerer. |

| #14YunruMar 11, 2015 8:08:01 | Yup. The ideal Magic Stones EK (or in general, Fighter 20's lackluster) MCs after Fighter 11. |
| #15melloredMar 11, 2015 8:15:56 | Fighter 20 isn't lackluster. The 4th attack is great.
It's the fighter 12-19 thats lackluster. Except for the extra action surge, and champions regeneration. But that's not enough. |
| #16YunruMar 11, 2015 8:24:37 | It's lackluster in terms of pizazz, rather than mechanical effectiveness. |

| #19melloredMar 11, 2015 9:03:05 | Sure. I wasn't saying that boring shouldn't be an option.
Just that fighters are boring. |
| #20Lord_KadarianMar 12, 2015 14:28:32 | consider this other people can use your magic stones, you produce three magical stones. which do magical bludgeoning damage (which skeletons are weak against) also gets people past DR so bonus action make stones party loads and fires and you cast eldritch blast to attack the party gets to use your high charisma to attack and damage, and everyone gets past damage resistance, or at least three of you throw.
