| #1SycoSurferSep 09, 2014 16:01:42 | I am joining a group that has all the bases covered except a pure damage caster. I have narrowed it down to Evocation wizard or Warlock pact and patron? From what I have read each has perks that come with the class. I was leaning towards the wizard for extra support but I talked with the bard and she said she is going buffs and crowd control. So I am free to focus on being a strictly damage dealing machine.
15,14,13,12,10,9 stat roll
I'm playing a half Orc which I know is not optimal but personal preference.
The intimidation would work great with warlock charisma, but after that it's basically a wash.
This is my first 5th ed. Character and I haven't read the entire PHB yet so I'm not sure how all the skills and saves work and everything ellse will be learn in game or when I get time to finish reading PHB. This was a short notice invite that I am trying to prepare for so any tips or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Quickening spells along with empower and heighten can pump out some crazy damage per round, as can twin used with spells that are otherwise only single target for everybody else (like disintegrate).
That said, if you want just consitent round to round damage you cant go wrong with a warlock. Eldritch blast even though its a cantrip can pump out a lot of damage and is spammable.
It really kind of depends if you want burst (sorcerer) sustained (warlock) or spell variety (wizard) |
| #3woifSep 09, 2014 16:20:59 | The warlock will give you plenty of strong at will damage with agonizing blast and hex up. Going evocation wizard/sorcerer could also be good so you can help your bard buff as each of you can concentrate on a different spell. |
| #4SycoSurferSep 09, 2014 20:26:18 | We have a cleric and paladin in group as well as the bard. So I think buffs and control will be handled. Maybe I don't understand how the Eldrict blast works because I don't see it keeping pace with a wizard who can blast multiple times with multiple high lvl spells. If you use hex it limits you cause you lose one spell slot but is pretty powerful.
Help me figure this out. At lvl 11 with say 20 charisma (I'm not sure how the stats advance past that if they can. Haven't read over magic items and all...
Start fight hex then flame strike 8d6 +1d6 hex= 9-54 32.5 avg? Or Eldrict blast- 1d10 + 5 x3 +d6 hex on each hit correct? = 36-63 around 50 average? granted the multiple attack rolls might not always all hit but that's a pretty solid hit each round with an at will if this is how it works.
Wizard at lvl 11 lvl 6 spell disintegrate 10 d6 +40= 50-100 75 average. Or chain lightening 10d8 on 4 targets 8-80 44 average or 196 potential spread out but still powerful. Lvl 5 spell Cone of Cold 8d8 in 60 ft. Cone= 8-64 36 avg. per person in cone. Could be cast twice. LvL 4 Fireball 9d6 AOE 9-54 32.5 avg can use 3 times Lvl 3 Fireball 8d6 AOE 8-48 28 avg. can use 3 times
So depending on amount of targets wizard would be better for large group of enemies and warlock better vs. one big ugly.
if I am doing this correctly that is please let me know of I am off. |
| #5wills2009Sep 09, 2014 20:34:39 | You're not wrong, just remember the wizard will only really get to cast disintigrate a couple times a day, and you will get finger of death if you want as a level 7 invocation which is nearly as good and same idea.
You can also pick up fireball as a fiend warlock, which you will always cast as a level 5 spell. Can't do it all the time but even once a fight you should be able to manage if you get a short rest or two during the day.
Just remember the fact that eldritch blast even comes close to matching spells makes it good. EB is free and spammable, forever. Anything else costs spell slots. It's not fair to say a level 3-5 spell does more damage per round, because it should, for the few rounds you can cast it before running out of slots.

| #6Xaielao2Sep 09, 2014 21:00:50 | Also note that Eldritch Blast shoots 4 bolts at high level. Now it's up for debate if Aganizing Blast adds your Cha mod to every bolt if you hit multiple targets or just the primary. But assuming every bolt gets that +5 at 17th lvl, it can be pretty solid for multi-target. Still not up there with Evowiz for aoe but an at-will means you can always use one of your best pure damage spells. |
| #7melloredSep 10, 2014 6:55:48 | Depends on what you mean by pure damage.
At-will damage? Warlock. Though they are short on slots for burst damage. Nova damage? Sorcerer. Though they will burn though their slots and spell points quickly.
Evoker sits somewhere in between.
Overall, it's probably warlock 2/sorcerer 18. You can quicken your fireball, and then hit with eldrich blast. |

| #17dwgautierSep 10, 2014 15:32:17 | Bard is the dark horse in this race. At sixth level take hex and scorching ray. That combo will be amazing DPR. At lvl four take spell sniper for eldritch blast. Bard is amazing damage if built right. |
| #18dwgautierSep 10, 2014 15:40:47 | Bard also gives you bestow curse. When cast as fifth lvl slot it doesn't take concentration... So you can have hex and curse up on the same target. Scorching ray another lvl 5 spell slot and a 10th level bard is doing 12d6 fire plus 6d6 necrotic plus 6d8 necrotic if all attacks hit. Not bad for single target dpr ![]() |
| #19dwgautierSep 10, 2014 15:46:54 | BTW. Hex gives disadvantage on ability checks related to chosen stat, not saving throws. |
