| #1HermanTheWizeApr 13, 2015 6:10:02 | Wondering what people think are the best solo classes? Me and my friend have done solo campaigns in the past and to pretty decent effect. Might be starting a new one soon and wanted peoples input.
Also would like to know peoples feats of choice for these solo classes. |
| #2melloredApr 13, 2015 6:14:21 | Any campaign will need to be tailored, so it doesn't much matter.
Otherwise, probably wizard. The most variety of abilities. I'm probably go as a wood elf with lucky feat and try and keep the days short. |
| #3QwertyAzertyApr 13, 2015 6:37:03 | depend on the campaign.
In a fight, I would go Paladin or cleric since they can heal themselves, do decent damage, and got some decent utility spell to overcome most obstacles (find steed a pegasus with DM aproval and you can fly)
Wild sorcerer could be interesting, since you no longer have a team to destroy with your random self centered fireball, many of the "bad effect" become more helpfull, making the magic surge interesting in solo campaign. Spell like ray of frost become a lot more usefull since you might want to kee a distance between you and the bigger monster.
If you go full spellcaster, you need to be carefull when managing your ressources. and you DM should make the dungeon knowing the fact that you have limited ressources.
If you are able to short rest easy, fighter become interesting.
If you want more tactical approach an assassin rogue who will simply perma stealth is way and surgerycally assassinate the target can work very well. Specially with the proper magical item (a good crit based weapon allowing to kill most target with a single strike of assassinate, a way to go invisible to allow assassinate attempt in circomstance where you shouldn't be able to do so etc...)
make sure you get your main stat up ASAP. Constitution is a very important stat as well, since you are the only PC, you will need that huge HP pool even with spell caster since you are the only target, you'll have a lot of concentration check to succeed. Constitution is less important for the rogue (since you are aiming at one shot kill then hide so no one can find you rinse and repeat and if you are force in combat, you are propably dead, since rogue shine during the surprise round and after that they will have a hard time to get sneak attack without any help from team member.
EDIT: Bard can be very good solo character considering they can do EVERYTHING, yeah they are not as good a caster as the wizard, yes tehy are not as good a rogue as a rogue, yes they are not as good a healer are a cleric, but they are better stealther then a cleric, they are better healer then a fighter, and they can fight in melee better then a wizard.
Moon Druids, between there wildshape, a full casting progression using both healing and offensive spell and the ability to become a squirrel and hide in the forest for a easy short rest.... Moon druid are probably the best solo class now that I think about it properly.
it all depend on the campaign setting and on your play style. |
| #4Danny_MontannyApr 13, 2015 6:34:02 | Magic is pretty useful if you're by yourself. I'd say a Rogue/Warlock would be pretty good at all 3 aspects of play.
Paladin/Bard would also be.
Half-Elf is probably the best race for this. + 2 Charisma for your social and the other 2 +1 for combat and exploration. 2 extra skills for social or exploration.
Assuming of course that it's not just a smash-em-up campaign. |
| #5manduckApr 13, 2015 6:49:56 | I was going to say paladin probably is up there. You get some martial abilities, some spell casting, armor and weapons, self heal abilities, saving throw bonuses and some immunities. You'd be pretty durable and able to dish out some damage. |
| #6xirr2000Apr 13, 2015 13:15:20 | My money is on Warlock. I have made a lvl 12 pact blade fiend patron warlock who is amazing. Get medium armor feat and you can be very solid in melee as you can buff yourself with some great spells, highly mobile, can turn invis, fly, protectin from evil....lotta options. Out of combat they are great as they have some great sneaky skills and charm spells to allow them to do spy stuff or really roleplay in just about any situaition. Invocations are awesome, get the one that allows you to disguise yourself and you can get into tons of fun/trouble.
Also, bards would be awesome all around. similar to warlock, can be tank/mage if played right. |
| #7jaappletonApr 13, 2015 14:42:20 | Bard is a solid choice. Solid spellcasting with the option to go Valor for the 2nd attack. Death Cleric isn't a bad choice. |
| #8melloredApr 13, 2015 15:12:30 | bard has an issue with his insperation dice only working on allies. |
| #9transcendantviewerApr 13, 2015 16:20:36 | I wish there was a feat to learn how to become proficient with shields. That would solve a large portion of the bard's problems. |
| #10melloredApr 13, 2015 20:03:01 | there is. medium armored, and yea, it's a pretty good feat for lore bards. but so is +2 Cha, healer, inspiring leader, and some others. |
| #11transcendantviewerApr 13, 2015 20:57:17 | Nice. I completely missed that in there. |
| #12SilentSinApr 13, 2015 21:38:23 | I'd say Moon Druid by far.
Good tanking. Good magic. Good mobility.
Basically whatever you need for a specific situation.
And without a party steering you around, you might be able to go out and actually search for specific animals that you want to be able to transform into. |
| #13transcendantviewerApr 13, 2015 22:39:00 | I think the Fighter is at least somewhere up there on the list. They have the greatest combat versitility due to feats. I built a grappler fighter that also has the Ritual Caster Feat (Wizard Rituals) and the Magic Initiate Feat (Warlock for Hex, Chill Touch, and Eldritch Blast). And he's still got room to diferentiate. |
| #14Tony_VargasApr 13, 2015 23:12:10 | You need a lot of versatility and some toughness to go it alone. Fighter is right out for lack of versatitity, wizard too fragile to make it to 2nd (though if you start at higher level it might be just fine). Rogues can avoid a lot of challenges with stealth and have some versatility from their skills, but no one to team up with to set up SA hurts.
I'm like'n the Moon Druid idea. Extra toughness from combat forms, versatility from spellcasting. Plus, I've always liked the Druid. |
| #15KentusApr 14, 2015 5:29:20 | I master a solo campaign and the player is a ranger. It works great, since the ranger is one of the classes, which are great in making and solving troubles. Hit Points, adequate healing, sneaky features and the ability to be the hunter, instead try to get out of being hunted. Of course it depends on the campaign, but making a ranger campaign is simple and fun. ;) |
| #16Logain08Apr 14, 2015 8:07:01 | I'm biased, since I play one, but a paladin seems a good choice: good hit points, armor class, useful spells, great damage and healing via lay on hands. Great survivability with the Aura of Protection as well. Although it would be quite easy to murder a paladin by putting him against a flying foe or ranged attackers. That would spell your doom :-)
Bards also seem a good choice: super versatile and can handle a lot of situations.
But the ability to solo a campaign is of course very dependent on your DM and how he adapts the challenges to your character. |
| #17HermanTheWizeApr 14, 2015 8:19:33 | So far it's coming down to Dex Paladin or Ranger. |
| #18jaappletonApr 14, 2015 8:36:17 | Favored Soul Sorcerer? They get medium armor, access to Cleric domain spells and Metamagic. |

| #20Danny_MontannyApr 14, 2015 9:26:26 | I'd still take my Half-Elf Rogue/GOO Warlock over anything for solo play. It's just way too much fun. If I can't handle it alone, I'll just make someone else do it. |

| #22miburo99Apr 14, 2015 9:56:19 | Of the PHB Core classes, I'd say Dex Paladin or Valor Bard. You want dexterity so you can be versatile in melee or ranged combat, better important save, get the drop on your enemies (pretty important when you're the only one), and decent AC in situations where you may not have your armor. Either class has spellcasting, healing, and people skills which are all useful. THey each have their own niches and flavor depending on what you want your character to be.
Agreed that with Unearthed Arcana, the Favored Soul sorcerer starts looking pretty good--especially if you take the Life domain so you have some healing spells under your belt.
If I was DMing a solo campaign, I'd probably add a houserule that switching out weapons takes one object interaction instead of two (sheathing your sword, drawing bow and arrow).
Edit: Also, Half Elf Lore Bard/Warlock. Darkvision, lots of skills, mage-armor at will, great ranged magical attack, and stick them with a rapier if they get close. |

| #24SailorNashApr 14, 2015 11:13:56 | Human Druid Criminal. Melee, magic, skills, feats, healing, utility...you should be covered no matter what you do. |
