Hello everyone,

I want to make a human Eldritch Knight for my next campaign and I was thinking about what spells I should choose with this character. Currently I'm thinking blade ward and fire bolt as cantrips, shield and protection from evil as 1 level spells, darkness and gust of wind for 2nd level spells. A good early level choice for the first non-abjuration/evocation spell you get is blur, I think. And then way, way later, of course the haste spell. For the other spells, I'm drawing a blank, not really knowledgeable on spells and their creative use...

Any input is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

a spell you might consider before blur as the first non ab/ev spell would be magic weapon. second lvl spell and is a bonus action. it might help in a low magic campaign or help with the back pack of weapons. have your main choice be magical like a +1 longsword and if you come across a mob with res slashing switch out to a warhammer and pop the spell.

Hmm, at first level you get 3 spells only two of which have to be evocation or abjuration.

I'd say something like: thunderwave, protection from evil and good, and either feather fall or find familiar.

Level 2 you get another first level spell limited to abjuration and evocation. Shield is good or maybe magic missle/chromatic orb for a longer ranged attack.

Level 3: can't go wrong with shatter or Melf's acid arrow.

At level 4 you can pick from any list. I think good candidates are: hold person (all hits against a paralyzed person ate automatic critical hits), web, invisibility or misty step (teleport!!!).

I was bummed when I read that the EK class only gets Ev/Ab spells. In my opinion, your defense single-target offense are going to be fine.  You're going to want:

  • Spells that don't require concentration
  • AoE
  • Out-of-combat Utility

Maybe not a must have but I enjoy the ability to teleport to places that are otherwise out of reach or, alternatively, to teleport out of the grapple of a giant tentacle monster.

Certainly hold person and web (another thing to teleport out of) are excellent options as well. Ditto with invisibility if ou are going for a sneaky-type.

Does any of you have an idea as to what could be a good spell to use with the level 10 feature of the EK, that forces an enemy that you've hit in the previous turn to save against your spells with disadvantage. Could be a good combo: you smack an enemy on the head and in the next turn you unload a powerful spell on him.

oh man only 1st and 8th (then 14th, 20th) to choose any spell... that's some seriously hard choices! hahahaha but at least it's something (combine with ritual feat, and magic initiate feat, and you get signifcantly more choices - also of course possible MC)
