I would like somone to attempt to make a barbarian, or fighter, who uses their fists for damage, can have a back-up range weapon if needed. I'd like to see how your build progresses if you started at level 3. Please list pros and cons of your build(Relative to how you could build it diffrently).

Grappler Barbarian with a shield. You're backup ranged weapon is to throw the Fighter at them.

I am currently playing a build like this, although the focus is not just on unarmed, that is the majority of my damage.

Barb3 / Fighter 5 / rogue 1 currently.

Barb gives rage 3x day for resistance (bear totem), and rage damage bonus.

Fighter is battlemaster using menacing strike when applicable for bonus damage.

Rogue is for expertese on athletics to grapple opponents.

Generally I grab the target with one attack, prone it with shield master feat and then use my second attack if one of the first 2 options failed for a retry or to hit it with unarmed damage since my hands are full with shield and grapple. Damage while raging was flat 9 (1 + 8 damage bonus) so not impressive but the prone/grapple on a baddy was worth it for the benefit of the party.

Recent changes to unarmed combat may change the effectiveness as I am not sure if unarmed can be used with abilities that mention Weapon as a keyword anymore under the new erratta.
