| #1JustTheDrummerJul 05, 2015 7:11:38 | Hey there everyone!
I made this character for D&D 5e months ago and I have just been dying to join a group to role play him. I finally found a group online to play him in. I was going to post a bit about the character himself and the class build so I could see what you all think. Note: this character is not meant to be a stat block, I did not power build him, I built him to match the character concept.
The character is a Grey Elf (High Elf) Eldritch Knight - Fighter. From a young age he never really accepted the ways of his people. He saw how the grey elves treated the other races, even the other elves. He belived all creatures were equals and none were any greater than the others.
There were two things he did love about his home, one was when the near by mountain Dwarves would come though town. He admited their strength and fighting abilities. He would often challenge them to wrestling matches and other games. The other was the vastly extensive libraries and research facilities. Dispite his love for melee fighting, his family forced him to do magic training as was the way of the grey elves.
At the age of 40 he left his home in the Greyhawk mountains and started traveling. (At the current time of the game he is 213 years old.)
Okay, so to spare you a lot of details xD he is a super smart dude. He has he sage background. He just loves everything about nature, how things work, and cloud giants. He knows many languages (yes they all come from background and race trates.) He carries notebooks around with him so on and so forth. Okay he is trying to develope his own fighting style where he mixes magic with melee fighting.
Defensive fighting style, shield, splint armor, cloak of defence, and morningstar. AC 21 at level 3. STR-15 / INT-16 / WIS-13 / Everything Else-10.
The spells are all bassed on fighter level 3 - Cantrips: Shocking Grasp, Fire Bolt, Poison Spray / 1st Level Spells: Chromatic Orb, Shield
For a bit of flavor every spell that he casts turns into magical gauntlets around his hand. Shocking grasp - glowing blue gauntlets form around his hands as he pulls back and punches his opponent. (damage and all are still just basic spell damage) and ranged spells do the same excpet the gauntlets shoot off his hands to the target(s).
The over all result at level 20 being a tank (Plate armor, shield, and so on.) with melee spells (yes I will be taking spells like fireball and lighting bolt as well.) Feats: Alert, Charger, Savage attacker. (Maybe Tough), As for the stats I know I am going to max Int and Str.
Please feel free to tell me what you guys think. If there is anything else you would like to know or anything you have questions about please ask. Thanks! |

I would recomend grabbing the feat Warcaster before anything else since that will let you cast spells while holding a weapon and shield. Also if you want to be the tank I don't know if charging out at people will keep your party protected, and savage attacker only works once per turn, not once per attack so when you start to get more than 2 attacks I don't know how useful that will be for you. But it looks pretty solid and that's just my 2 cp. : ) good luck with everything |

With the shield, you're gonna have a bit of trouble if the DM makes you stick to the action economy when it comes to drawing/stowing weapons as it's written in the rules. Especially when you get to War Magic and your bonus action won't be used for teleporting your weapon back to your empty hand. So long as you keep things mixed up, you shoul be fine. No DM wants to see, "I drop my weapon, cast Shocking Grasp, then pick up my weapon and attack with my bonus action" over and over again. |

Most DMs won't allow a free hand and shield to be the same thing, but yours might let you get away with a buckler. It wouldn't cost an action to pick up a dropped weapon, just an item interaction (of which you only get one). What I was talking about is how the game system sometimes clashes with the logic/storytelling. So I can do what I had quoted in a turn, in regards to the rules, but it just seems like... cheese. Sure if it happened once in a while, no biggie, but someone who keeps dropping their weapon to do this one thing over and over is just lame to me. Honestly, just talk to your DM about hand waving the object interaction limit. If you stow your weapon, smack a guy with Shocking Grasp, then grab your weapon and swing on them, is it really gonna break the game? |
