Hello everyone first time post 10+ yr player I'm having trouble getting the exact from the 5th edition book word ruling for my character build to justify to my DM I'm trying to multi-class monk/fighter and put mostly all my focus into Dex based spear fighting (with multiple attacks and increasing the damage) and I wasn't sure what the best steps to take to make sure this character works.....any ideas?

Either monk 3/fighter 17, 3 attacks with d6 damge.  (+2 action surges, and extra feats).

or monk 17/fighter 3, 2 attacks with d10 damage. (+ki and other abilities).

get polearm master either way.

If quarterstaff qualifies, there is no reason for spear to be excluded...rulings, not rules.

It's the same reason the pike doesn't gain all of the benefits of the feat.

Spears and pikes are piercing/thrusting weapons.  Quarterstaves, glaives, and halberds are weapons you swing.

Admittedly, you can swing a spear to slash, but that's not how the weapon is used primarily.

a 15 fighter has what... 3 attacks.  a 1 lvl dip into monk would give martial arts for a permanently useable bonus action and allow you to use dex with the spear but you have to meet the prerequisites of a fighter and monk... that's pretty MAD.

I think I'd just go straight monk honestly and just downplay the mysticism of the monk and focus on the martial aspects of the class... you can't benefit from martial arts unless you don't wear armor.  Seems better to just stay monk or maybe mix monk and rogue so you can sneak attack and only have to focus on dex and wis.

What's your concept other than a dex based spear fighting character?  Or is that it?

The benefits of Polearm Master = AoO when entering threat range + bonus action attack (d4 bludgeoning)

Martial Arts gives you the same exact bonus action attack. Forget Polearm Master... it does very little for you.

Of course, I'm just repeating what Mello, dinotaur and Bloodscythe said...

ummm... gotta add something useful.

If you feel you must have a feat for some AoO, get Sentinel, but only if you are the only one in the party with Sentinel. Honestly, unless you are V. Human I wouldn't take a feat until late lvl 16 anyway, you are going to be quite MAD... spend your ASI maxing your dex then wis then con - you will need every +1 you can beg, borrow or steal.

How a spear is used depends on the length of the spear and the type of spear head. If it is a long bladed spear head it could easily be a slashing weapon but to top heavy to throw. One with a very short handle like used by some tribes in Africa was strictly a melee weapon that was not thrown at all and was a piercing and slashing weapon. Or the spear could be long with just a peircing head like was used in Braveheart to stop the cavalry charge. Spears can be either a two handed weapon or one handed weapon depending on length and weight and how it is used. If used two handed the back end of a spear can be a quite effective weapon to jab some one with swipe them between the legs or on the top or side of the head. Spear are very veristal.
