We are starting our first campaign in 5th edition. We played a one shot and I played a lvl 1 Rogue lvl 2 Trickery Cleric and had a blast. The actual campaign though is going to be a bit more involved than the one shot we played, obviously, so I want to play a character that will have some longevity and that I will enjoy to roleplay.
Group is going to be fairly small due to our schedules. I know one of the players is going to play a Half Elf Ranger. Our ST tends to run very narrative campaigns with investigations and intrigue and such. Of course typical combat and such come in but it is very much a role-play heavy game, which I love.
I am looking to play an inquisitive sort of character. I love to ask questions and always have a trick up my sleeve. In 3.5 I loved playing the Factotum. I am looking to play some sort of caster this go around and I am strongly leaning toward Wizard. I want to take a more adventurous background to show him travelling around and getting into trouble, so I am thinking of taking either Sailor or Folk Hero.
Problem is, I am not sure what class. I love the Wild Sorcerer but I dislike their reduced spell list. Same with the Bard. Wizard is the most free form in their choice of spells, so I am strongly leaning toward them. Or Coastal Druid. This is my problem; I can't make up my mind. If I choose Wizard I then have to choose which school. I seem to flip between Abjuration, Conjuration, Divination, and Transmutation.
A lot of what I am going to be doing is based on role playing. The inquisitive nature, the wanderlust, etc. I just want the utility to save myself when my curiosity leads me into trouble. |

Jack of all trades covers alot of skills you might otherwise be missing. You can inspire to help your ally diplomacy as well, and you can pick extra spells from any list to cover whatever. |

Take the Observant feat, perhaps. Expertise in Investigation and Insight. If it was me I'd go variant Human Bard with 8, 14, 10, 14, 12, 16 and the Observant feat, or possibly Magic Adept to pick up some Wizard flair.
Another option that you might not have considered would be Knowledge Cleric. |

Lore Bard all the way. If no one can cast rituals, maybe pick up Ritual Caster as a feat, or dip into Wizard (for Divination School if you wanna get that far) or Warlock (Tome Pact).
Also note that at some levels, Bards can learn ANY SPELL IN THE GAME (of appropriate level). So there's that for versatility.
If your playstyle is anything like my groups, running out of spells isn't a big deal (with only a fight or two a day), but not having the right skills is bad! |
