character with split personality

I just had an idea for a PC with Split personality disorder, to the point where neither personality knows the other exists (short of people telling the character about their affliction. I would think the two could run different classes, as they technically have different training. What are the thoughts of more experienced players on this?

I understand some things would not make sense, like having a sorcerer/pally, because the body would still be sorcerer. I also think however that it could be used for similar characters, like a Druid/Ranger. In my mind the two would level separately. When the character goes to sleep, or is knocked unconscious, you would roll something like a d20, even gets one character while odd gets the other. Just a basic idea at this point, but is there promise? Perhaps even a chance to run a whole campaign where a split personality spell has been put on the whole world?

I understand your reasoning, and did not mean to offend in any way. My actual inspiration for this is a single page from the Artemis Fowl series of books. The protagonist, due to meddling with magic, gets a mental disease that, at later stages, can cause separate personalities to manifest. Late in one of the books Artemis is charmed, thus losing control of his body as his mind is put to sleep. This allows his alternate personality Orion to take over, at which point he employs a fighting technique that Artemis could never learn himself. This single scene was the seed for my idea, thus the reason for it being so bare bones.

I was mainly thinking of using this to add flavor to a quest with few players, maybe only one or two. I thought it would be interesting for the party to be a pally and wizard one day, while the next they are a cleric and pally, or wiz and barb. I also think that a spell, or curse, would be the best way to explain it. Perhaps the players ancestors angered the God of Forked paths, and now the descendants must live as two people in one body.

Another possibility I just thought of is that it could be caused by an ancient Wish spell. Some foolish wizard millennia ago decided to wish for "No one to be alone anymore." That would make it a way of life, rather than a plot hook. Every sentient creature in the multiverse would have at least two separate "selves", following similar paths through life.

Normal npcs would change from day to day, but the most effect would be on the characters, as they have various classes, as well as bonds and the sort to work out. I might go with the same class, different subclass route, but I might also allow separate classes, so long as they are similar. Magic classes would become a problem, due to all of the different sources of magic, but it could be worked out I think. Maybe something like EK/wizard, or Pally/Cleric.

I am also going to handle experience separately with the selves. You could have a level 5 illusion wiz, but you might just as easily wake up as a level 3 EK. Would be interesting, but I could also see a problem when someone gets the same personality repeatedly, and only levels that, then gets knocked out in combat only to wake up as the alternate self that is half the level of the first. Can see so much book keeping in my future if I actually do this.

EDIT: I just realized I am turning this into a DM question.

I was in a 3.5 game previously which had two players who couldn't commit full-time.  They had two characters in one body, and whoever was playing that session had their character emerge.  (How did this happen?  Both characters were part of fated lineages, there was an accident and someone could have died, magic fusion to keep them both alive.)  Both were tank characters, but one was a half-orc barbarian and one was a human druid.  I found a ring in the MIC which let them each have their own equipment, which each could swap in upon awakening.  I don't recall how leveling was handled, since that wasn't my department.
