Just got back into rpg after a looong time away (last was 2nd ed.).  Playing a campaign with a bard and having a great time.  Due to some players schedules, often there are only two of us available.  We are going to go through the old Temple of Elemental Evil instead of not playing until we can get the full party.  So my question is what two classes and races would be best for running this using 4e?

Thanks fo any advice.

i have had good luck with cleric and rogue duos. i'm running an adventure for two at the moment. one is an elf paladin, oath of ancients. the other is an elf arcane trickster. the have a spokesman, tank, healing in the paladin and a scout, trap/lock, arcanist in the trickster. i'll be allowing them to take on hirelings or have a NPC join on occasion.

If you're using just the four core classes in basic, I've had things work well with a fighter and a wizard who find some potions of healing along the way.

I have DM'd for two players who both wanted to be fighters, and I had either a rogue or wizard NPC join them. It has gone well when I've done that, but I was slightly more liberal with rests to make up for the lack of healing/cleric.

If you are using the PHB, I'd say a paladin or ranger along with a rogue or wizard coul work well.

Really though, if I only have a couple of players, I encourage them to play whatever class they want and as a DM, I find a way to make it work.
