Clearing up spell rolls to hit

Hi all, just a quick question.

Using the example of a fire bolt as a sorcerer with charisma of 17(+3) and a proficiency of +2, should the modifer on my roll to hit be the sum of both (+5) or just +2 (my proficiency)?

All spell casters are the same, but for the sorcerer specifically, you'll find the rule on PHB page 101. Add your +3 from CHA and +2 from proficiency, for a total of +5.

Thanks,I was reading the same thing (spell attack modifier) and thought it was the +5, however while using virtual tabletop software the spell was rolling at +2 and when I questioned it there I was told it was correct at +2.

I just wanted to clear up the interpretation, thanks for the responses.
