Cleric of Bane or Bhaal

So.. I am thinking of joining my LGS, to play the new season of AL.

I was wondering though, how I would go about playing as a Cleric of Bane or Cleric of Bhaal. It wouldn't be so difficult to do a Cleric of Bane, if he keeps his deity a secret, and his bond is to destroy the Zhentarim from the inside, so I am more curious about playing a Cleric of Bhaal.

As of 5th Edition, Bhaal was resurrected into a Greater Deity, which means he has a pantheon again. His Domain is Death though, which isn't in the PHB (which is incredibly stupid), so I am curious if I could still do it for AL?

I've not seen any rules against it, but I want to double-check what the community has to say.

You can be a cleric of Bane and be a Zhent.

I don't think you can be a cleric of Bhaal.  Due to both lack of Domain, and alignment issues (only Evil allowed is LE Zhents).

The Zhentarim and the Clerics of Bane do not get along, so the only way a a Cleric of Bane could at the same time being a Zhentarim, he would have to be aiming to destroy it from the inside, in a guise of causing complete chaos and war.

I was more concerned with if it was in the rules to be allowed the Death Domain. Cleric of Bhaal could be a Zhentarim, as it could be a stepping stone to commiting mass genocide.

You cannot use the Death Domain in AL unless you obtained a special cert giving you permission to do so.  These were given out as DM rewards during certain conventions last year.

The lack of domains does not limit someone from being a Cleric of any deity, as you can always take the life domain.  Granted, a Cleric of the deity of murder taking the life domain would seem a little weird on the surface.  It is allowed in AL, though.  You can be a cleric of *any* deity in the PHB list of Forgotten Realms deities.  If Bhaal is listed there, then you are good to go.

Also, you can be Lawful Evil and be a member of the Lord's Alliance.  That could work well for a Cleric of Bane.

The Death Domain would be the only suitable domain for a cleric of Bhaal, but that sucks for those of us with no money to go to Conventions.

The death domain is definitely appropriate for Bhaal but you might also want to look at some of the others.

If I recall (I looked him up, was pretty much correct, hooray for remembering random things of no importance!) Bhaal was god of murder, slaughter, and assassins so the War domain might fit as a god of slaughter. Trickery could also fit for the god of assassins going in for the silent kill. Trickery especially might be appropriate if he is destroying the Zhentarim from within.

There really isn't any other Domain that would fit for Bhaal.

I am trying to think of how I can do a character..

A cleric that must make a small personal sacrifice to enact healing a companion. Like Whipping oneself's back, or self-inflicting pain.

My choices sound like Ilmater, and Loviatar. Problem is, Loviatar wouldn't answer the prayers of a healing spell to heal anyone, and Ilmater is a Good Deity.

The only idea was a corrupted druid that revels in corruption and decay, rot. That would fall into Talona or Bhaal. Problem is that I like the idea of a slightly rusted sickle (rusted with blood) versus a poisoned dagger of Talona.

Think I am going to go with Talona. The problem is still the Death Domain.

Hell... any domain can fit Bhaal; just get creative. Any alignment can fit any deity, too.

A "corrupted" druid that revels in corruption, decay and rot isn't necessarily evil. Death is part of the natural order of things. What they call "rot", you see the birth of millions of microorganisms. Corruption is simply the name fearful mortals give to the last step in the great food circle, where everything begins anew. Society believes it evil, but only because of fear. You have transcended such fears; You see the truth, that a decaying corpse is a feast of renewed life. A bloody sickle would be an excellent symbol - it's a farming tool used to harvest food for the next generation of life.

This philosophy could work for Nature or Life domains and just about any neutral alignment...

By AL rule you are limited to the deity from the Forgetten realm and the non human deity list in the PHB, and those diety are limited to the domain written on that list

So Bane is allowed and you can choose between life (accessible to ALL cleric) or War. There is no alignement restriction so you can be any alignement, but if you choose to be E you can only play Lawful Evil and most join Lord Alliance or Zenthrim

Bhaal would be allowed since he's in the list, but you have to use the life domain (no choice) since unless you own the death domain cert you are NOT allowed to play death domain, your DM is NOT allowed to allowed you to use the death domain in Adventure League
