Between Cold spells or Lightning, which would be more beneficial.

Depends what you want to do. Damage or control? Why not both?

Well, full disclosure: The amount of Fire spells when compared to either of those types is ridiculous. That said, it's also stereotypical. I've been debating between a Cold or Lightning Sorc myself.

Really, look at the spells the Sorc has access to. Also consider spells like Chromatic Orb, which can be almost any damage type. Be aware of what level you'll start at, since at low levels, if you aren't Fire-based, your choices are very limited.

It's about 50/50, if you ask me. I lean toward Cold, even though I think the spell selection is poorer than Lightning. I think Cold gives more control, which is a personal preference due to my party composition (Others at the table aren't spellcasters), and because some Lightning spells have caveats, such as having a rough time being used underground or indoors. Additionally, the go-to Cantrip for Lightning is a melee-touch spell, and although Shield is great, not mixing it up in melee is better, IMO. Ray of Frost has a 60ft range.
