Okay, it looks like we may be creating new characters for the new AL season. This year I played a rather slow-witted Paladin and had quite a bit of fun with him, but I think for next season I would like to try someone with a bit more going on upstairs. I was looking around for inspiration and I stumbled upon Amaunator and Lathander being aspects of each other(who is an aspect of who? I dunno). I always liked Amaunator, ever since his appearances as the dead god in Baldur's Gate 2: Throne of Bhaal, so I am going to make a character who is a servant of Amaunator and kind of a Sherlock Holmes character.

Now, do I make him a Knowledge Cleric or Divination Wizard?

Knowledge Cleric - Raised as a scribe & spent formative years making copies of law texts. Called by Amaunator to spread the laws and write down the laws of different lands. The temples of Amaunator need updated copies of the Laws from across the land, so I travel to different places, write down the laws of the lands and send them back to the temple.

+ Added skills and "knowledge of the ancients" make him know a lot right from the beginning

+ Easier time at lower levels due to armor & healing

- I need to have a decent Int (for the investigator concept), Dex (no heavy armor), Con (everyone needs HP), Cha (for the lawyer concept) and of course, at least 16 Wis (I am a cleric). That leaves me with one dump stat, Str, and whole bunch of 12's.

Divination Wizard - Raised by a "cult" that never truly gave up on Amaunator. They have always believed his "death" was just a test of the faithful, meant to teach them self-reliance. As such, they worship Amaunator in their hearts, but do not ask for his assistance in their lives; they will work directly with the forces of magic rather than through any god.

+ Can dump Wis & Str

+ Higher level Wizard spells are approximately 162,678,932,415,620,557,110 times better than high level cleric spells.

- Less actual skill proficiencies until later levels (He will start with 17 Int & take "Keen Mind", then +2 Int. That pretty much completes the "concept" part of the character, so after that I will take Skilled & Actor & maybe something else...)

**Either way I decide to go, this will be a Human with the Observant feat at L1.

You need Dex less as a cleric then you do as a wizard.

Also, getting proficency in skills does more for your skill checks then boosting Int would.

And you don't need to start with 16 Wis.  Paticlalry if your focusing on knowlage and support spells.

I'd actually suggest a normal human knowlage cleric.

8+1 Str

13+1 Con

13+1 Dex

13+1 Int

14+1 Wis

13+1 Cha

Then with observant at level 4, you have 16 Wis, and 14 in all your other stats.

And you can be reasonably proficenct in any skill and saves.

Or wizard.  They have more spell slots.

As a cleric, I will occasionally venture into melee with Spirit Guardians and anything resistant to Sacred Flame. As a wizard, if anything gets in melee range I will be hiking up my skirts and running until they stop chasing me, or using defensive spellcasting (Blur, Mirror Image, Invis, Shield) that a cleric doesn't have access to. Since that's how I play it, I consider AC (and therfore, Dex) to be more important to a cleric than a Wizard.

I didn't think about normal human... that might be a much better option, especially since there's nothing super-special I want to get at 12, 16 & 19 as a variant human. I could do normal human with a 15 starting wis... Observant at 4, +2 Wis at 8 & 12, Keen Mind at 16 (a good servant of Amaunator always knows the time until Sunrise & Sunset) and Warcaster at 19. I like that option.

I haven't had a chance to play my Divination Wizard yet, but I'm really looking forward to the Portent feature of the class. Mine is a Variant Human with the Lucky feat for added awesomeness.

Str: 8

Dex: 14

Con: 13+1

Int: 15+1

Wis: 12

Cha: 10

Lucky

I would sprout the cool servant of Amuanator aspect from a background and grow that from any class.  Arcane Trickster comes to mind.

L1 Observant and +1 Int

L4 Moderately Armored and +1 to STR or DEX

L8 Keen and +1 Int

L10 Int +2

L12, 16, 19 whatever

A class like Rogue and Fighter are nice because of the ASI/Feats.

If you go Divination Wizard you can take Ritual Caster (Cleric) to get a bunch of nice divination spells from Cleric like Commune, Augury, and Divination.

You could start Knowledge Cleric, for the skills, hit points, and other goodies; then dip Wizard for a few levels for the expanded selection of utility spells and ritual access. Then just sort of alternate between the two as you continue to advance.

You'll never been as butch on the front-lines as a more martial focused cleric, you'll never be as blasty from the rear-ranks as a proper wizard. But you'll have a list of utility rituals that goes on for pages, amazing knowledge skills (rivaling a Lore Bard), and be a fantastic source of buffs for the party.
