A party member has proficency in Poisoner's Kit and was wondering about crafting poisons. The only poison in the book at the moment is Basic Poison. According to the crafting rules, it would take 20 days and 50gp in materials to craft one vial of poison. Is that right or some sort of crazy oversight?

I would let the player brew in mass batches.

I would also look through the monster manual and note all the monsters with poison and make these additional options to brew.  Hopefully the DMG will have additional fun, happy poisons, but until then you should make it up.

Well, I was rather asking is that how it is supposed to work? 20 days for a vial of poison?

Poison kit is terrible as is. Seriously terrible.

I'd cut it down to a day for X number of vials based on the character's level or one of it's modifiers (Look at Barbarian's Rages or Bard's Inspiration Dice for guidance). In this case, you would not get to have more uses than that X during any one day.

I'd also consider either raising the CON Save DC (based on the character in some way, by level or modifier) or increasing the damage (maybe a gradual progression with level).

Another simple solution is just say if you have poisoner's kit, you have basic poison. It takes an action to apply it and did I mention it's terrible? It's really terrible.

I believe the 100 gp cost is a typo; I think it should be 10 gp.

However, as written, the posion is a total waste of money to buy, and a waste of time and money to craft. The vial can only coat one melee weapon with a poison that has a duration of one minute or ten strikes.  On ranged weapons, it's even worse, coating only three pieces of ammunition.  The save is a mere DC 10 (meaning that average people will save against it 55% of the time), there is no effect on a save, and the effect on a failed save is only an average of 2.5 extra damage.  If you assume that you hit with all 10 strikes, that's an extra 25 average damage.  However, with a 55% save rate, you cut that down to 11.25 damage.  And again, that assumes that you hit all 10 times.

By contrast, an NPC hireling costs 2 gp per day.  For the price of one vial of poison, you can hire five level one thugs for 10 days.  That sounds like a far better use of one's money.
