Hey everyone,

I'm sure this has been done already but for fun, let's make Indiana Jones using standard point buy.

And of course, disadvantage on anything with snakes.

Dex Fighter, Duelling Combat Style.
Variant Human for either Tough (Because let's face it, being an action hero, he's going to have those extra HPs.), Durable (Similar to before, because an extra point in Con and the ability to just recover from wounds, like an action hero should), or for Lucky (Again, Action Hero. He's got some stupid luck going on.).
16 (+1 from Variant Human) Dex
14 Con
14 (+1 from Variant Human) Int

12 Wis

10 Str

8 Cha

Weapon of choice, the Whip of course.

(Naturally, I was hesitant to give him such a low Cha, but with so few stats to go around, it was either this or Str at 8, and he's proven to be even slightly stronger than probably the average man. If this were rolled stats, I'd perhapss grade his Cha as around a 13 or so and his Str at about 11 or 12.)

Don't forget, Indy also has a Smith & Wesson revolver, with 6 shots.

Indy should probably have a range of up to 15 ft. with his whip, and a bonus on disarm attempts with it.

Rogue Thief

Expertise in

Investigation, History and Arcana to seek out those artifacts and work out the puzzles

Sleight of Hand or Thieves tools to bypass the wicked traps

Second story work and Use an object

Come to think of it with high Int needed for the knowledge skills, could refluff Arcane trickster spells as devices or inginuity.

Has to be a rogue or at least have plenty of rogue in him. His whole personality shouts it.

Then you work on more mechanical stuff like crossbow (gun) and whip (or possibly thorn whip?)

For the gun, you use a magic hand crossbow with the quirk that it makes a loud noise when used. His whip would be magical as well, but with the quirk about the user hearing a song when used. Give him a hat of disguise with the self-assured quirk and you're all set for gear.

DEX / INT Rogue, homebrewed subclass.  He needs features from both Thief and Arcane Trickster.

The revolver can be approximated by a Wand of Magic Missile with the Loud property.

Low CHR is not totally a problem - note that his girlfriends are more likely to punch him in the chin than be seduced - and the blazing exception (in Last Crusade) was entrapping HIM at the time.  His efforts to Persuade or Intimidate people usually cause short-term comedy and medium-term plot complications.

His background would be Academic in name only.  The features would come from everywhere else.

For fun, give him Monk3 (Open Hand).  He usually gets into fistfights, not into weapon duels.

I Think fighter battle master/rogue thief. If he took crossbow Expert at 1st or 4th levle that would give him a hand crossbow Att as a bonus action. Not a six shooter but close

This isn't necessarily the closest build to the character but definitely a playable one.
He wears med Armour and uses a hand cross bow and a whip for Att.

Str 10, dex 16, con 14, Int ,12 Wis 14, cha 8.
Battle Master 14/ Thief 6
F 1-5/ Ro 6-7/ F 8/ Ro 9-12/ F 13-20
Lv 1- Crossbow Expert
Lv 4- Dex +2 (18)
Lv 8- Medium Armour Master
Lv 10- Martial Adept
Lv 14- Dex +2 (20)
Lv 18- Toughness
Lv 20- lucky

Nobody covered his background yet, which should obviously be sage, either with the professor or discreditef academic speciality.

Battlemaster Fighter is very good.  Some levels in ranger seems appropriate as well for the whole explorer aspect.  He routinely goes to uncharted places following ancient maps after all.  He should have a hand a crossbow (aka gun), a whip and his fists (MC monk for unarmed strikes?) since he seems to always get into fist fights with bad guys twice his size and yet he wins.

Indy is not an optimal character. He loses constantly but gets through it all due to endurance and perseverance and a fair amount of cleverness.

Barbarian 1: for unarmored defense and rage to represent his endurance when staying in a fight longer than he should, he is does not dodge punches like a monk, he just keeps fighting because he won't quit.

Fighter 3 Battlemaster / Mariner fighting style. : Indy climbs a lot! hanging onto trucks, tanks, planes, you name it. He just wont let go so obviously he has a climb speed. He is not the master of combat but the trip, parry and precise maneuvers can account for more of his ability to take a hit, trick shot with a whip and hit when it's important. Facing a swordmaster and shooting him from 10 feet away isn't the sign of a superior marksman but amounts to landing the hit when it counts. Some form of grab maneuver would be a good houserule for the whip.

Rogue 6 Thief: This is where the skills come in with expertise in Athletics, History, Investigate and Religion. Remember Indy is constantly making bad choices about people so no training in insight, also he isn't particularly stealthy so I skipped expertise there. Also note that uncanny dodge gives him more staying power against German bruisers until that pesky plane finishes turning around.

Lore bard would be thematic but the skills don't match up as well as the rogue and the magic makes no sense besides the occasional viscious mockery.

Ranger could also work with favored enemy Nazis, terrain type crypt.

Stats would be something like

Standard Human

Str   12

Dex 14

Con 16

Int    14

Wis  10

Cha 12

Possible feats might include Linguist, Dungeon Delver,Tavern Brawler, Durable, Lucky, Tough

Indy is not an expert with the pistol, so I left out crossbow expertise and he rarely if ever used it at the same time as a whip.

Edit: I amost forgot, Background: Sage
