| #1Baby_BoboSep 14, 2015 15:53:53 | I've recently started a game created a paladin and rolled the following for my stats: 17 13 13 12 7 6.
Human (Variant) - Rapier/Shield & Studded Leather
DEX: 17 (18 racial) CON: 13 (14 feat) INT: 6 WIS: 12 CHA: 13 (14 racial)
Feat: Resilant (Constitution)
First question: Are there any other feats that I would even want to take? I was looking at Sentinel, Defensive Duelist or Shield Master (however my str(athletics) will be limited.
Second: Does this seem like a good trade off?

| #2GladiusLegisSep 14, 2015 16:49:15 | Those are the most honest rolled stats I've seen on these forums ever.
Yes, going DEX is absolutely the wise move here. STR-Paladins still want at least average DEX (10+), but DEX-Paladins can do just fine with a below-average STR score. Other stats look good, too.
Defensive Duelist is solid. One of my favorites, though, is Inspiring Leader. Aside from that, getting DEX to 20, then CHA to at least 18 should be priorities.
Looks good, all mentioned. Have fun. |

| #4Treantmonklvl20Sep 14, 2015 20:08:47 | As mentioned, Defensive Duelist is very good for a Dex based melee fighter. Lucky is a great feat for any character, it's just universally awesome. Inspiring Leader is also an extremely good choice. Just to add something of my own, I would recommend looking at Mounted Combatant (assuming you will have a mount at some point) |

With that low of a strength you migh have trouble carrying your armor, shield and weapon at the same time. THe standard encumberance rules are a bit more forgiving. Either way best of luck, you did a great job with the stats you were given. |
| #6CrazyMcNinjaSep 15, 2015 18:15:18 | DEX Paladin witha rapier, Defensive Duelist and the Dueling Fighting Style is excellent and could potentially be better than a STR based paladin (higher DEX save and dex skills, for one). It also allows you to wear lighter armor to not only save on weight but allow you to fully use that Dex mod for AC, especially after getting Medium Armor Master (although that feat is kind of overshadowed by others like Inspiring Leader or Lucky). |
| #7miniitxSep 15, 2015 18:47:47 | Sorry about those rolls, dude. Have fun RP'ing a pally who is roughly as intelligent as an Ettin. You're basically a Flesh Golem at Int 6. You're Frankenstein's Paladin. An Intellect Devourer would choose an Orc over you. You are the intellectual match for a Skeleton.
Could be worse -- you're still 1 Int smarter than a Hill Giant or Shambling Mound. |
| #8miniitxSep 15, 2015 19:07:38 | I mean, I hate to harp on this, but a Bugbear would score higher on the SAT. The brutish Cyclops, outsmarted in every fictional depiction since antiquity, is 2 whole points higher. The Abominable Yet, at 9, is Stephen Hawking to you.
You're the nutritional equivalent of celery to a Mindflayer.
Your party will probably have to help you open doors. |
| #9CrazyMcNinjaSep 15, 2015 19:51:46 | Those are actually pretty good points. I think a lot of people see the low INT score and go "oh bummer looks like investigation will suck!" Instead of "oh shoot my character is almost mentally handicapped."
However, a friend of mine had a barbarian that had similar stats - INT was super low, but everything else was 10 or higher, and he put a pretty good score in WIS. He roleplayed the character as being pretty stupid (ie not understanding jokes, failing in most social settings, barely being able to speak etc), but once in a while when he did speak he would say incredibly wise things because of his high wisdom. |
| #10MalthornSep 15, 2015 20:15:53 | As your DM I would let you bump that 6 up to 7. At least then you would be smarter than your mount. |
| (Reply to #9)miniitx | Haha, I can understand the classic "Hulk smash!" barbarian with a low Int score, but that's generally 8 or higher with standard point buys. Paladins, the walking embodiments of their chosen deities or virtues, seem like they'd be much harder to play with the mental powers of a small child. Not that it can't be done! I can picture any number of comical ways to roll with it. Maybe this a is Paladin of Garagos or Bahgtru, or perhaps a nobler deity who just really pities the otherwise very nice character and has endowed him or her with protective powers to keep them safe. Maybe the character is so singlemindedly obsessed with their own Strength or Dexterity that those attributes and drive are enough to grant supernatural powers without divine intervention. So dextrous that its personality is basically that of grasshopper in a human body, or so strong that it emulates the tics of a gorilla. Maybe, in fact, the character was raised outside of society, by bears (strength) or giant eagles (dex) and can barely even speak Common, demonstrating more animalistic behavior than human.
There's always a way to roleplay it and make it interesting. I just think you need to seriously consider if that's the kind of character you want to undertake and not just gloss over "Int's below 10, he's just dumb." That's a cop-out! |

| #13MazzySep 16, 2015 0:43:09 | I'm not a fan of Defensive Duelist. A paladin needs his reaction to make opportunity attacks, otherwise enemies will walk right by him and hassle the mage. For a paladin I would go with either Sentinel or Mounted Combat.
And dex or strength is fine as both have advantages and disadvantages. A dex fighter will act sooner, but his AC will be little lower even dumping all his stat boosts into dex. Dex saves are not as big a deal as you are making them and getting knocked prone with strength saves all the time is no picnic. |
