Did your group find a way to combat adult and ancient dragons?

Dragons are high powered opponents. Some of their features include:

  • massive hitpoint pool (200-550hp)
  • flyer and/or aquatic
  • high ranged damage output (elemental cone with 54-91 damage per breath attack)
  • high melee damage output (47-69 damage/round)
  • autosaves 3/day
  • lair actions at initiative pass 20

Any advice to fight those beast if you have time to to prepare, know the lair, know the color and do not want to negotiate but to kill the dragon?

What classes do you have and what level?

Contagion and Otto's Irrisitable Dance, are pretty good spells to use against legendaries.

Our party has a Barbarian, a Fighter, a Paladin and a Wizard. Currently at level 9 (==> 5th level spells).

Contagion looks nice but I am not sure if it will consume many autosaves as Con is always a very high save for dragons. Not sure if a familiar will be able to reach a dragon to deliver that touch range spell though.

Otto's Irresistable Dance only 30 ft range - it will be hard to get this close to a flying dragon.

Did you actually use this spells versus an dragon? Or is this only a suggestion by reading? I am specially interessted on strategies that already worked for groups!

Have a Monk (attempt to) Stun-strip it of its Legendary saves.

Then have a Paladin go Nova to strip it of about half its health. Death Cleric can also Nova for about half health.

Heck, have all three. Bonus points if they come from the same monastry.

Edit: At that level replace 1/2 with 1/4.

Last time we killed a white dragon with two arrows of white dragon slaying by casting gretaer invisiblty on the Fighter/Archer who action surged 4 attacks on the dragon. After the breath weapon attack nearly killed the wizard (ring of resistance cold FTW) he failed the concentration check and cast Polymorph on the Barbarian who grappled in Great Ape form so he could not fly away. A fireball (saved by autosave), Divine Smite Paladin attack, sharphooting archer we killed this white dragon in two rounds. BUT our GM did miss to play the lair action, so it could have been a lucky victory.

Tell me your stories!

Having a fully charged fighter with sharpshooter and bless will do it. Buff him with protection from elements, and fire shield if facing a red/white Dragon, then send him in there to do his (or her) thing.
Adult Dragons? Force cage them and shoot them from behind full cover.

We fought a CR 13 white dragon, I think it is a possible conflict for a group of four 8th level characters with the gift of two white dragon slaying arrows! We had time to prepare for the battle. And it is part of the Rise of Tiamat adventure from Wizards of the Coast.

And yes not every encounter must be combat but we decided this one will be a combat encounter for special reasons.

Spoiler
We thought that the dragon would slay an hole tribe of ice hunters if the took away something from its lair and decided we needed to eliminate this threat for the tribe.
