One of my players is asking if he can play an Eldritch Knight but with divine spells instead of arcane. At first I suggested playing a Paladin, but he basically wants a fighter with access to cleric spells. I was thinking of allowing him to take cleric spells with the same restrictions as a normal EK, and have Wis as his spellcasting stat. Has anyone tried it this that can provide feedback?

Check the cleric list for how many of what schools they have. IDK what cleric spells fall into abjuration and evocation, the two schools EK get access to the mosts. I dont see how this would unblanace the game in any serious way, it might be even a little weaker, not really sure. Does he have a divinity he plans or has been following?

It should be fine.  I mean, doesn't "divine eldritch knight" basically describe a paladin?

You could just have him play a Paladin, but let him replace Divine Smite with Action Surge at Lv. 2 (a nova option for a nova option) and Improved Divine Smite with the third attack at Lv. 11 (a damage boost for a damage boost).
