| #1KalaniJan 09, 2015 10:45:40 | The following is a list of clarifications for rules that cause frequent confusion and misunderstanding within the gaming community. All of these clarifications are 100% RAW/RAI compliant and are intended to help people understand how to address these issues at their table.
Rules which have ambiguous rulings, or which the official answer is "ask your DM" will not be clarified here. |
| #2KalaniJan 09, 2015 10:57:41 | Armor Class In 5E, there are multiple different ways to determine your Armor Class including (but not limited to): Armor, natural armor, draconic resilience, unarmored defense, and mage armor. Each of these features, items, spells, and abilities provides your character with an AC formula (eg. 10+DEX+WIS, 13+DEX, or some other number).
Despite belief to the contrary, these do not stack. When you have multiple sources that determine your AC, use the method/formula which grants you the better AC.
Items, features, spells and abilities which provide a static bonus to your Armor Class (eg. shields, rings of protection, the shield spell, etc) stack with the above. You can only benefit from one item/spell of each type. You cannot benefit from two shields, two rings of protection, or two copies of the shield spell, but you can benefit from one of each (in addition to your normal AC).
Unarmed Strike and Natural Weapons Unarmed Strikes, bites, claws, slams, tentacles, etc are all treated as weapon attacks. If you have an ability which grants you a benefit when making an attack with a weapon, you gain the benefit when attacking with an unarmed strike, or natural weapon.
Ability Scores With few exceptions, you cannot have an ability score higher than 20. Unless an item, spell, feature, or ability specifically states you can exceed this value - these are the absolute maximum values for all 6 statistics, regardless of race.
Additional rules clarifications to follow. |
