What fighter variation has the highest single targete DPR, while also having quite a bit of survivability? Or how would you adjust your DPR build to make the survivability increase highly while losing minimal DPR.

I.E. Id rathher have 80 percentile highest DPR and 60 percentile survivability over...... 95 percentile and 20 percentile survivability.

Note: You can add Barbs or Paladins to this discussion if wanted.

Easy. Hand Crossbow Expert Sharpshooter with Archery fighting style. Melee build'll have (slightly?) higher damage, but ranged adds a lot to surviability. Especially if starting Barbarian (Unarmored Defense ftw).

If we include multiclassing, probably the above but the following level-wise:

Barbarian 1/Fighter 11/Rogue 8.

I've gained a lot of appreciation for the difference tactics can make recently... for instance

A sword & board paladin summons his Warhorse. Encounters a group of melee fighters & wins initiative. Without actually mounting the horse, he moved into combat & uses Shield Master to knock one enemy down. Moves to the next opponent and makes his standard attacks. Warhorse does a trampling charge on the poor guy that got knocked down (2 attacks at +4 (possibly w/bless) with advantage for 11 points each). Lots of damage, melee character wins

Change your opponent to a bunch of small Ranged attackers or something that can fly and the Crossbow expert fighter will leave the melee attacker in the dust... shooting anything you can see is a lot easier than having to run something down and stab it.

Change the opponent to a flying dragon and the ranged rogue (single attack with high damage) will win.

I believe that if you are trying to damage to an immobile object in an empty room all by yourself, a great weapon fighter has a very slight advantage over the crossbow expert, and both lose out to the GW Vengance Paladin.

A few other comments,

I essentially consider PARRY as better than barbarian RAGE damage reduction without any healing from other PC's factored in.  If other PC's will heal you often then barbarian rage is much better for damage reduction.

Consider:

Without extra healing from other players a barbarian can esesntially reduce damage equal to his hp pool + whatever hit dice he recharges on short rests. A barbarian has maybe 30-40 hp at level 3.

Assuming you get 2 short rests then you have 12 superiority dice with a level 3 battle master fighter with +3 dex and PARRY every turn can reduce:  12 * 7.5 = 90 damage reduction in the day.  Also, you can heal for 8.5 average per short rest with 2nd wind.  That comes out to 25.5 healing per day.  Total combined healing and damage reduction = 115.5.

It will take the barbarian quite a few levels to overtake the fighter in terms of damage reduction and that's only when the barbarian is raging.

***For an extra sweet survivability combo build a fighter and take 1 level of barbarian for 2x rages per day on top of your PARRY damage reduction.

Sorry - totally missed the point of the question "highest single targete DPR, while also having quite a bit of survivability" and just went off answering a question I thought you asked rather than the one you did. My Bad.

Fighter 1 / Rogue the rest. Crossbow Expert and Sharpshooter. Arcane trickster with Mage Hand always uses sneak attack & has Mirror Image/Blur/Invisibility for defense.

I also wanted to add some info on paladins.

Paladins can heal a ton once they get level 3 spells (Auta of Vitality is amazing).  Until they get level 3 spells they are okay but probably better off using their spells for offense than defense/healing.
