I know I was in a thread where we were discussing this but I can't find it now.

Anyway, I went ahead and asked Mr. Crawford about it. He agrees with it as a free action, "in most situations."

Agreed. It is not explicitly stated, but is heavily hinted at. There is no big list of "no action" actions, but they are there, and do exist, and dropping something (a grapple, for example) is considered "no action" whenever I've seen it talked about in the rules

That and other editions it has been that way, so yeah, that helped influence me a bit ^_^

Re-posting this link in the FAQ threads, if you don't mind.

I thought this was pretty well covered in the "OTHER ACTIVITY ON YOUR TURN" section where it says:

"You can also interact with one object or feature of the
environment for free, during either your move or your
action.
"

I didn't know this was in contention.

The 'free interaction' list is not really based on reasonable/realistic actions; it is based on story-telling and game balance.

Drink an entire flagon of ale?  Get something out of your backpack?  Plant a banner?  None of these are trivial interactions.... often taking more than 6 seconds just by themselves.  But they make for a better story, and don't affect the game/power level much, so.... they are free.

Dropping something should be similar.... and have a similar game/power caveat.  (I can't really think of any caveats now... but reserve the right if really clever players do.)
