I've been thinking about starting with 2 levels of druid (moon) to help smooth out the early wizard levels and I was wondering if my analysis was accurate. Also, maybe some thoughts on which wizard school to pick. I was wondering at which levels druid 2 (with 1 CR forms) would become less useful?

Pros and Cons of Druid 2/Wizard 18 over Wizard 20

Pros

  • Druid 1: Cure wounds, melee option (shillelagh), medium armor (non-metal) and shield proficiency. A few more rituals that otherwise aren't on the wizard list.
  • Druid 2: A boost in temporary hit points, extra attack, skill bonuses, vision, climbing movement, burrowing. Makes use of bonus actions. Abandon Strength/Deterity/Constitution?
  • Wizard 1: Mage armor combined with shield in non-beast form for higher AC. Mage armor in beast form for higher AC.

Cons

  • Delayed Wizard spellcasting.
  • Restricted from spellcasting in beast form.
  • At least 13 Int and 13 Wis.
  • Less spells recovered from Arcane Recovery.

Other

  • Same # of spell slots.
  • Druidic/Arcane Focus met with a wood staff?

So ... your primary benefit is that you can turn off your ability to cast spells?

I'm not sure that it's entirely worth it.

Delaying your spells by 2 levels is a  major flaw of the build. I simply don't think you get enough to make that worth it. While it's not terrible, wildshape is just a poor fit for the wizard role.
