Druid Concept Issues

My friend is planning on running a 5E game in the next few weeks, and I thought it would be fun to play a Druid, but flavored like a primal wizard. (Similar to 4E, in that respect.)

I'm having trouble figuring out how to play a 5E Druid this way, though. The spells, by and large, don't seem suited to this idea ... like I have to be a healer, instead. There simply aren't many damaging spells and their damage is somewhat less than the Wizard can pull off. I don't mind being a bit less than optimal, but I'd like to be viable. I admit, the idea of playing a Druid healer is weird to me, so I can't bring myself to do it, and while I want to deal damage, but I definately don't want to be fighting as a cat or bear or something - that's never appealed to me.

Anyone have any suggestions for spell selection at 1st level to allow me to feel like a wizard of the natural world (as in, is there an aspect of these spells I'm missing?), or am I barking up the wrong tree and should just pick a wizard?

Ideas?

Thanks!

Is it a 5e game starting soon (using Basic/Starter Set)? In that case go for one of the Basic classes.

Is it a 5e game starting after the PH is out? Wait for the PH and see how the Druid looks in the final version.

Is it a game using the playtest rules? In that case it could be worth having a look at the druid spells again.

Maybe you'll have the option to get a spell focus (like in the old playtest) and go for a full summoner.

I imagine the Druid will get Produce Flame as a cantrip. Why not work this out with the DM? (Proficiency Bonus + Wis modifier) as a bonus to the ranged attack roll. Maybe 1d8 or 1d10 fire damage. It would scale like the Wizard's Fire Bolt or Ray of Frost. Did you take a look at the playtest Druid with the different circles, etc.? I believe he had Gust of Wind, Entangle, Faerie Fire, Thunderwave, Charm Person and what not. I think Heat Metal, Hold person, Barkskin, and Flame Blade as a swift spell at second level.

The (3rd level) playtest pack druid in my group has has some success with the thunderwave spell.  It's a group favorite.  I also cue up AC/DC's "Thunderstruck" when he casts it.
