I have been looking around on the forums, but cannot find much help for a druid of the land. I plan to build a Pirate Gnome druid, and would like to know if there is a ocean circle, or if I will just have to go with coast.

Coast is your best bet, yes.

Make sure you look at the Elemental Evil Players Companion for any spells added to the Druid list.

Hmm... If I were your DM, I'd say you would get a small bonus to your Perception/Nature rolls relevent to discoveries and locations. Like it wouldn't help identifying the species of wolf in front of you as a Nature check, you'd get no help there. But a bonus to reading maps for relevent information, anything subtle there might jump out at you since you're a map maker. Like "It's not a naval map, it wouldn't be made of this paper, it wouldn't be able to weather a storm". You'd get some bonus info based on your background, yeah. I'm having trouble coming up with a good example to give you, but yes.

But that's me, every DM is different.

Check out my Land Druid Handbook if you need more help.

You have all been extremely helpful, so thanks a ton, and I did look into your guide Chameleon. I did not manage to find it until after I had posted this, so I was at least able to establish that there is no deep sea druid choice. As far as perception, I was thinking something along the lines of, because my gnome has a better eye for proportions, she would be able to tell if a wall should be in a certain place or not. "Oh, from the looks of the walls outside, there should be another room over there, not a wall. SECRET DOOR!". I doubt this would be applicable everywhere, and I also like your example jaappleton.

As a DM, I veto most suggested 'quirks' during character creation which provide some sort of consistent mechanical advantage, such as your character's sense of proportions. The big reason isn't even one of game/character balance, but of bookkeeping. It's more crap about your character that I have to memorize, lest I be called on it later.

If a character possesses some quality that could give him a bonus on a certain action, I'd much prefer the player only bring it up when that situation occurs, to allow me to adjudicate on the spot.

One thing I really like doing for the land druid is making their bonus spells not based on their preferred nature, but based on where they are the last time they gained spells. So if you are in a coastal regions those would be your spells for the day, if before your next long rest, you traveled to the mountains, then your bonus spells would be from the mountain list. A druid shouldn't just pick and choose what about nature they like and will emulate, they should love and respect all of nature and use their surroundings to the best if their abilities.

I really like that idea, OnionDruid, and will very likely propose it if any of my players chooses to play a druid.
